Description

In this lesson, in grammar section students review and practice third person's verb formation and spelling rules in positive and negative sentences in Present Simple Tense. Through listening to the recording students identify /s/, /z/, /iz/ sounds. Reading section provides controlled practice. To improve the productive skills students write 2 true and 2 false sentences about Carol and Tom. Lesson is followed by the further practice -doing ex 8 on page 89 and 95 as individually then practice asking questions to their partners then pass the information about their partners to others.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Reviewing third person's verb formation in positive and negative statements in Present Simple.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Giving students semi-controlled writing and speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows flash cards to elicit the verbs which have different spelling rules in Present Simple such as study, wash, watch, go, do, and have. Writes the elicited verbs on WB which leads to the topic of the lesson.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Sts choose the verbs in the paragraph about Carol and T writes them on the WB. Then T explains the verb spelling rules for third person in Present Simple.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Sts fills out the gaps in given ex 4b to practice in pairs and compare their answers. T clarifies negative sentence form and word order once again. Sts completes the present simple form of verbs given in ex 6a.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T has students listen to the pronunciation, identify, and practice verbs in the recording which have different sounds at the end.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Reading starts with Introduction of Tom who is Carol's brother and followed by the controlled practice. Sts reads a paragraph about Tom and fill out the gaps with given verbs in bracket in correct form of Present Simple in pairs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Student A completes the questions on pg 89 and B on pg 95 individually, then ask questions each other and answer. Then tells answers the other students in the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Student A writes 2 true and 2 false sentence about Carol and student B writes the same for Tom. Ask students to close their books and by taking turn students say their sentences each other and the other one identifies which ones are true and false.
