Description

Class Profile The students in this upper-intermediate class are young adults and adults (age 18-31). They hold office and professional jobs, and are mainly interested in English to help them develop their careers. They are interested in discussing topics of relevance in their lives, such as technology, social networking and current affairs.

Procedure

famous personalities (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show slide 1 of Michael Jordan, What is his profession? Is he rich? Is he famous? Why is he famous? Is he the number one personality in his field? Why do you think he is famous? Show slide 2 of Madonna. Repeat the questions. Show slide 3 of Zuckenberg Repeat the questions. Final question What do they all have in common? I will elicit some information on them as a whole.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Use the two slides and the two sentences to pre-teach key vocabulary important for understanding the article. Play The WORD WALL GAME https://wordwall.net/resource/21636645 and using QCC students will know the meaning. Then students check pronunciation with a Kahoot game where they click and listen to the audio and decide which is the correct pronunciation. While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask students to write the headings to activate schemata and allow them to get some context. I will give them 2 minutes to do so. I might need to help clarify the meaning Ss check in pairs their answers before OCFB where I will show a slide with answers. The next activity will be

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss they will now be reading individually for detailed understanding. Screenshare Google Form. Tell Ss the answers are not always fully stated in the text, they may have to read 'between the lines. Ask them to focus on finding the answers and ignore words they don't know that aren't relevant. But you can use a dictionary to check one or two unknown words (point out a link to the Cambridge dictionary online link in Google form). Work on your own. You have 8 minutes. ICQs: How long, 3 MINUTES individuals activity. Paragraph 1 What does the article state about her as the reason for her popularity? How has she helped Yahoo grow in the last ten years? Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell Ss they will be having a short debate about one of the topics. Ask Ss which topics they'd like to talk about. ICQ: how many topics? One. You have one minute to make notes in response to the questions. When one minute is up, say: you will be speaking for one-two minutes so your partner should time you. When max two minutes is ended, ask the speaker a question. Put Ss in BORs for 6-7 minutes. Try to pair Monitor and write examples of good language or errors on post-its on a Jamboard. FB on their ideas, ask if there were any similarities or differences. DEC in OC. Feedback and homework assignment in PADLET. TOPIC ONE Do you think MONEY measures success in society? How about your life? Is money important? Is money what motivates people to achieve things? Are there other motivators? TOPIC 2 How important is it for someone to be a high achiever? Why? Are people interested in goals? Are goals important because of family, society expectations? Does everyone want to be popular and recognized for his or her achievements ?
