Each group states the nouns they picked out. While presenting, teacher guides students to describe in one word the noun they are talking about Which girl? Which balloon? How many children are playing at the park? With the next group, students are asked to say one descriptive word about the noun they are pointing out , e.g. The blue bike, the brown dog, the old lady , When all students have presented in this manner, tell students that a word that describes a noun is called an adjective. Teacher prompts /supplies vocabulary to help students
Explain that adjectives describe nouns. The adjective comes before the noun e.g. young girl, hungry boy Adjectives can talk about; size, number, feeling, color, how something feels We use adjectives to make our writing sound interesting.
Show students a slide on projector with sample sentences. Ask students to identify the adjectives in each sentence. Ask students to identify the nouns being described. Students are asked to list adjectives that describe pictures shown on the projector. Teacher makes sure all students have participated. Teacher asks shy students directly.
Students are back to group work. For each noun they identified earlier, they will write a sentence using an adjective. Remind students those adjectives come before the nouns. Remind students to capitalize and punctuate their sentences. Teacher goes around the groups and monitors; listens for wrong sentence structure. Teacher stops by each group and offers guidance.
Individual work. Worksheet on adjectives is distributed and students solve individually.
