Description

In this lesson, students students mainly practice the receptive skill of listening with the help of several related exercises. Different types of tasks on exercises enable better focus on meaning. Speaking practice is achieved answering oral questions at the end of the class.

  • The main aim of the lesson is to give sts practice in listening for specific information in the context of first meetings.

  • To review question forms and to give students freer speaking practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (3-5 minutes) • to set the context and engage students

By providing cards with questions to students teacher asks them to think about answers to a crossword puzzle. Each second student gets a card of different color to answer ACROSS, and the others work with the other cards to answer DOWN. The teacher then gets feedback from students helping them guess the right word with images at the same time. Then teacher ask question about the game "Who wants to be a millionaire". Students probably know the game and wish to describe how to play it.

Listening for eliciting the right information (5-7 minutes) • to get students to focus on important points while listening

The teacher gives sts instructions on how to perform ex 11.He/She distributes handouts with several sentences that must be marked as true or false. Sts look through the sentences and listen to the cd. Teacher then asks them to check the answers in pairs, after which gets answers from the whole class.

Making questions (5-7 minutes) • revising question structure

Teacher explains how to do exercise 12 by presenting question structure and reading the first example. Then he/she distributes cards with the exercises and gives students time to write the questions. Sts check questions with their pair-partners and listen to the right answers on the cd.

Listening for specific information (10-12 minutes) • focus on details

Teacher ask students to change their places so that communication takes places between different members of class. After giving instructions and handing out cards with multiple choice questions teacher plays the cd. Time is given to students to check their answers with their new partners.

Listening to compare information (7-10 minutes) • to learn to find out differences

This is and additional activity for which sts already have a card. They listen to the cd and compare info in the recording to the information in the previous task. Rosie and David get points for the same answers. Sts may be asked to calculate the score. Depending on the number of the students, class may be divided into groups of 3 or 4. The answers are discussed within the groups and then with teacher.

Speaking practice (5-8 minutes) • encourage sts speak on familiar topics and make use of past tenses covered earlier on the course

Teacher writes the question on the board for the sts asking to describe how they met someone important in their life.
