In this lesson, the students will engage in some reading practice in the context of letters. The students will also get to use their productive writing skills at the end.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about letters in the context of family

  • To provide product writing practice of a letter in the context of family


Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. T gets the Ss up, splits them in to 2 groups and throws two piles of envelopes addressed to family members. One is to the male side and one to the female. 2. T instructs the Ss it is a race to stick them up on the board with the oldest family member at the top and youngest at the bottom.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To introduce letter construction and some vocabulary

1.T instructs the below use of etiquette language for letter constrcution, concept checks and writes them: Dear Sir/Madam, Yours Faithfully/Truly Dear Steve, Yours Sincerely Hi Nuran, All the best/Best Wishes 2.T ellicts the words bank, engineer, skiing, tennis, retired, lawyer, doctor and hospital via pictures and sticks them on the WB 3.T concept checks them ALL 4.T drills each word 5.T writes the name of the word underneath each picture

Reading for Gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading

1.The teachers instructs the Ss that a letter will be and they will have 2 minutes to answer the following questions in their groups 2.T demos the gist reading and writes the questions 'Does Patricia have a big family?' 'Is it a formal or informal letter?' 3.T gives ICQs 4.T projects letter 5.Students do the exercise 6.WC FB

Reading for Detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading

1.T instructs Ss that some True/False questions will be projected and the Ss will have 3 minutes in pairs to complete the task 2.T demos a made up true or false question 3.T gives ICQ questions 4.T projects the questions 5.Ss work in pairs 6.WC FB

Writing Activity (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with related writing practice

1.T instructs students that they must write a similar letter to the T. They must use simliar stuctures from the projected letter. They will have 3 minutes. 2.T demos the first few lines 3.T gives ICQs 4.T gives Ss the HO and Ss write a letter. 5.T instructs Ss to give their letter to the person to the left of them and correct any errors. They have 2 minutes. 6.Ss do error correction 7.T instructs students to read out a couple of the letters. 8.Ss read their colleagues' letters
