Description

In this lesson, Students will imagine how life will be like in the future and they will get to learn more about "the 4th futurological Conference". They will also talk about science fiction movies and future lives.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific detailed reading practice in the context of the future

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of the future
  • To provide some vocabularies related to the future and science fiction

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the topic and to get their attention.

T draws a picture of a brain and a storm light and ask the students "what do they think they will do?" (brainstorm) T draws a mind map with "2030" in between. T writes the word transportation on one of the maps sides and ask ss "How do they think Transportation will be different in 2030?" Ss work in pairs afterwords to brainstorm more topics to complete the map ,talking about changes they think will happen concerning each topic. (e.g Health) T gets WCFB

Pre-reading task (3-5 minutes) • To pre-check some vocabularies and to introduce the reading

T shows the ss some sentences about the future. Ss work in pairs to decide whether they think true or false. T gets WCFB

Gist reading/skimming (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading and to draw their attention to the content

T asks students to look at (exercise 1 page 76) in the student book Ss will need to skim the article to cross out three titles that cannot go with the content of the article. Ss work in pairs after to compare their answers T gets WCFB

Detailed reading (3-5 minutes) • To get the student to grasp the content of the reading

Ss will be asked to read each paragraph and match it with a suitable title for it (ex.2 p.77) Ss chek their answers in pairs T checks answers

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide the student with more practice of the vocabulary introduced

Ss work in pairs to fill the gaps with the words in the box (ex.3 p.77) T checks answers with WC

Post reading (5-8 minutes) • To give the students the opportunity to practice their speaking

T shows a picture of a Tom cruise in a sci fi movie... Check some questions -what's in the picture? " a scene of a movie" -who is he? " Tom cruise" -Is it a comedy movie? "Sci fi" T shows another picture of a popular Turkish science fiction movie..gets the ss to talk about it.. After presenting the target language T give the ss some cards with a word on them (e.g. UFO/ (unidentified flying object)a flying object that cannot be identified and is thought by some to be an alien spacecraft) Students will work in pairs to go around the class to pick a definition for the words they have.

Free practice/discussion (8-10 minutes) • To get the student to practice fluency and provide them with a freer usage of the language

Ss work in pairs A/B Each student gets a questions card and interview each others T asks ss what did they learn about each others after their discussion.
