Main Aims

  • At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to use the third conditionals to talk about regrets and reliefs in informal contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The student will practice listening for gist and for details.
  • The students will practice speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greeting: Show slide 1 "It’s already December, what did you do in 2021?” T modal: “For me, I changed my car, moved to a new apartment, and got a new job in 2021." "How about you?" - Free answer “Did you have any trips in 2021?” Show slide 2 T modal: "For me, I went to Cape Breton this fall. If I had more time, I would have gone to whale watching too.“ “How about you?” – Free answer “Next, we will listen to a story about Ryan’s class trip.”

Exposure (3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening.

Instructions: Share Slide 3 “Next, we will listen to a story about Ryan’s class trip.” “After listening, you need to answer these 2 questions.” M check for the first question: “Before we listen, let’s look at the first question” “Can anyone tell me, according to the first question, is the story talking about the past, present, or future?” – “Past” “Did Ryan remember they were visiting a farm?” – “No.” ICQ: “How many questions do you need to answer after the listening?” – “2” "Do you have questions for these questions?" FB: “What would Ryan have done differently?” – “he would have arrived on time” “Does Ryan regret the class trip?” – "Yes” – “What are Ryan's regrets?” – Free answer.

Highlighting (5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Instruction: “This time, we will find out what Ryan's regrets are?” “First, let’s look at the handout together” T Modal: Share Handout 1; “We already know the first answer, If……. Instructions: Show Handout 2 “Next, complete the following sentences with your partner using the third conditional, you will have 6 mins to finish the practice.” T Model: “Let’s do the first one together” “If I had known it was your birthday, I would have brought a gift for you.” ICQ: ”How long do you have?” – “6 mins” “Do you need to complete these sentences after your discussion?”- “Yes.” Task setup and monitoring: Send the Handout 2 in the chat box. Send Ss to breakout rooms Join in each breakout room to monitor. Content FB: “XX, what do you have for the 2/3/4/5/6 sentences?” Language FB: Give language FB when checking the content FB

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Instructions: “Next, we will use third conditionals to talk about regrets and reliefs that you had in 2021.” T model: “I’ll go first: If I had gotten the flu shot earlier, I wouldn’t have had to drink 2 bottles of Nyquil. If I hadn’t quit my old job, I wouldn’t have signed up for this teacher training program.” “It’s your turn, you have 5 mins, talk about your regrets and reliefs with your partner.” ICQ: “How long do you have?”-”5 mins” Task setups and monitoring: “I’ll send the topic in the chat box.” “Start now” Join each breakout room and write down the comment mistakes for language FB. Content FB: Do you have the same regrets or reliefs with your partner? What are your regrets/reliefs? Language FB: Ask Ss to correct the sentences from my notes.
