Main Aims

  • By the end of the class, students will be able to write casual/informal emails inviting people to come to their cities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using an email about inviting people to visit your country in a casual / informal context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students the following questions. What can tourists do in your city or around? Do you think people from other countries can have fun in your city or around? why? Slide #1 will be full of images to get visual students engaged.

Exposure (7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Tell Ss they will read an email. Juan is inviting Mario to visit his town. Text: Hey Mario, I know you are coming to Mexico, so I want to invite to visit my beautiful city. There are many things we can do here. We can go to the beach, we can go camping, and we can eat really delicious food. You don’t need to worry about paying for a hotel. You can stay at my place. What do you think about it? I hope you have a safe flight from Spain to Mexico. Regards, Juan Peredo Ask Ss they will answer the following sentences mentioning whether they are true or false. Mario is from Portugal. F Mario is sure he will visit Juan's city. F People can go to the beach in Juan's city. T People can't go camping in Juan's city. F Mario needs to stay at a hotel. F Tell students they have 3 minutes to read the mail and answer the sentences. Ask Ss to compare the answers. They have 2 minutes. Show the answers and ask Ss if they have any questions.

Useful Language (7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ask Ss to work in pairs. Tell them they will have 3 minutes to answer the following questions about the previous text. What's the salutation? Can you think of other examples? Is the language used formal or informal? What's the closing? Can you think of other examples? Is the writer's name included in the text? Elicit answers and give them other useful expressions and a template.

Productive Task(s) (15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Tell Ss they will now write a mail to a friend from another country inviting him/her to come to their cities. Students must mention at least 1. Salutation (informal) 2. Invitation 2.1 What you can do in your city. 2.2 What you can't do in your city. 3. Closing 4. Name 5. At least 30 words (not including name)

Feedback and Error Correction (10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Now, tell students they will work in pairs to read and check each other's texts. Ss need to checklist the following aspeects 1. Salutation (informal) 2. Invitation 2.1 What you can do in your city. 2.2 What you can't do in your city. 3. Closing 4. Name 5. At least 30 words (not including name) It is also ok if they can find mistakes while reading the text. Give Ss 5-7 minutes to do this. Go over a general OFCB and EC.
