Description

This is a listening lesson about the creators of Google. The lesson's aim is to provide practice to students and help them develop specific listening skills.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific information and detail in the context of Google and its founders.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of synonyms and antonyms in the context of a Google related interview.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Teacher greets students. SS are told to read the three starting questions presented by the teacher. -Do you use the internet every day? -How many hours? -What do you do online? T demonstrates the activity by answering the questions herself, then nominates ss to give an answer.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Meaning: T presents two words from (leave, the same) the listening text, a picture to illustrate the concept and a list of words. They are asked to select a synonym and an antonym for "leave" and "the same" word from the list. ICQs: How many synonyms and antonyms are you going to select? OCFB is carried out by nominating ss to give the correct answers. Form: Ss are given four scrambled sentences(that include the reviewed words) to put in the correct order. SS are asked to write the sentences in the chat for peer correction. ICQ: Are you going to say your answers? Pronunciation: After they have checked each other's answers. T has ss repeat the sentences and drills pronunciation of stressed words and connected speech.

Listening task 1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with an specific information listening task.

T informs students that they are going to listen to a radio interview and number a list of items in the correct order. SS are instructed to read the task before listening. A student is nominated to read the items in the task. T draws attention to the pictures and asks ss if they know them or who do they think they are. T shares a link to a form for ss to answer the activity, T plays the interview for students. SS are instructed to send their answers to a pair via private message before OCFB. ICQ: Are you going to send your answers for everybody on the chat?

Listening task 2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed istening task.

SS are shown six detailed questions about the interview, T nominates some of them to read the questions aloud. T shares the link to a form with the task and plays the recording. When the recording finishes ss are put in breakout rooms to share and compare their answers. ICQ: are you going to discuss or write your answers? T monitors ss' work. OCFB is carried out.

Post-Listening, speaking production (8-10 minutes) • To provide ss with an opportunity to speak about a text and personalise the topic.

For the final activity, SS read three questions about Google to answer with their information and opinion. Their are given a minute to think about their answers. T draws attention to the pictures to ellicits responses and demostrate the activity. After that they are put in breakout room to ask each other and discuss. T monitors and gathers information for delayed error correction. DEC: T writes some of the responses that need correction. SS identify the mistakes and correct.
