Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows SS the first slide, containing images of different famous brands. T asks SS "When you go shopping, do you buy big brands?" SS discuss the question in Open Class Forum.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

T pre-teaches "increase" and "consumer" using ECDW stages. Reading for gist: T shows SS an image with different logos (ex 1b page 107), T then shows SS a text (from page 106). T tells SS to read the text and find which companies are mentioned, and write the answers in the chatbox. T tells SS they have 3 minutes to do this. ICQs: which information do you need to find in the text? How many minutes do you have? Reading for specific information: T shows SS questions from ex 2 page 107 and tells them to take a screenshot. T then tells SS to read the text again, find the answers and take short notes. T tells SS they have 5 minutes to do this. ICQs: what are you going to do now? How many minutes do you have? T asks SS the questions and tells them to answer in the chatbox. 1 Where did Steve Jobs have a job on a fruit farm? (In California) 2 Who was the original Mr Starbuck? Clarification (10-13 minutes) • To clarify and highlight the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shows SS this sentence "Millions of dollars are spent every year by companies." T checks Meaning by asking CCQs: who spends millions of dollars? (companies) Are we more interested in the action or the people who do the action? (the action) What word do we use to say who is the doer? (by) T shows SS this sentence "It helps if your product is supported by the right celebrity." T checks Meaning by asking CCQs: who advertises the product? (the right celebrity) Are we more interested in the action or the people who do the action? (the action) What word do we use to day who is the doer? (by) T shows SS 4 sentences. T tells SS "Look at the verbs in bold in the sentences on the screen. Which are passive forms and which are active forms?" 1 Some popular brand names have surprising origins. 2 Green signifies nature, quietness and calm. 3 Millions of dollars are spent every year by companies. 4 It helps if your product is supported by the right celebrity. T asks SS to write the answer in the chatbox. T elicits FORM. T asks SS: look at the verbs in bold. How do we form the Present Simple Passive? (SS answer am/is/are + past participle) T drills PRONUNCIATION of the marker sentences and the Stress Pattern of the sentences.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows SS a slide with 10 sentences. T shows SS 8 different sentences on the slide. T tells SS to put the Present Simple Passive form of the verbs in brakets in the correct place in the sentences.
