In this lesson lesson Ss will do reading skill practice by reading a text about TV Star Oprah Winfrey. While they are reading they will also improve sub skills such as gist reading and reading for detail.Also they will have the chance to improve speaking and writing skills.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have improved their reading by means of reading for gist and reading for detail activities in the context of tv stars.

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this lesson I expect my Ss to improve their speaking and writing skills as well in the context of TV stars


Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To take the Ss' attention and activate their backround knowledge.

Teacher displays some TV star photos on the board and provide a motivating music.Teacher asks Ss to tell each other who the people are and what their job is.Ss are in groups of three. Then Ss tell the teacher who the people are. Teacher confirms the answers.

Pre-teaching Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To teach the key vocabulary in the reading text.

The teacher explains the new vocabulary to the Ss and elicits the meaning.Teacher uses CCQs to check whether they understand or not. Teacher uses mimes and gestures to introduce the key vocabulary.

Prediction of the topic (8-10 minutes) • To activate the students backround knowledge for the text.

Teacher asks Ss to look at the photos of the reading text and tell each other what they think about the passage.Ss are in pairs. Teacher monitors.Then Ss share their prediction with the class.

Reading for Gist (8-10 minutes) • To give the students the opportunity to have an idea about the text

Teacher asks Ss to match the headings with the paragraphs in the text. Ss work alone. Teacher monitors and provides feed back if neccassary.Then Ss peer check. Teacher matches the headings with whole class.

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To enable Ss to look for specific information in the text.

Teacher asks Ss to answer the questions in the tasks handout. Teacher uses ICQs to make sure Ss get what to do.Ss work alone. Teacher monitors. Then Ss peer check. Finally teacher answers the question with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To enable the learners to write an imaginary interview.

Teacher asks Ss to write a dialogue with their friends and gives some example patterns.Ss work in pairs and prepare a role-play activity.One of the pairs will be Oprah Winfrey and the other will be a celebrity. Teacher monitors and gives feedback to the students.Then students role-play at the board.
