Professions
Grade 8 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the professions through PPP. At the start of the class, the teacher asks the students about the professions they want to become in their native language. By seeing the images of professions and studying the example sentences with the teacher, the students learn what professions do what in English. Later, there will be a controlled practice section in the PPP. Finally, students are asked to form sentences about the professions they want to become.

Materials

Abc Power Point Presentation

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of professions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with enough vocabulary so that they will be able to form sentences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

T asks each of the students they want to become along with their reasons in Turkish. As Ss are quite young T can make jokes to encourage Ss. The number of questions is 3-5.

Exposure (15-20 minutes) • To clarify professions through images and example sentences in the PPP.

The T shows the first profession in the PPP. The T repeats the name of the profession for a few times and asks the Ss to do the same. Then in the next slide there are images of people doing things related to that profession and below these images there are example sentences explaining what the person is doing in English. The T asks the Ss to repeat the sentence for a few times. The T goes to the next profession and follows this cycle. In that section the T should refrain from speaking Turkish. The Ss must see the images clearly so that they can keep the information better.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice.

In the practice section of the PPP there are fill in the exercises. Each of the students answer one of the questions. If the S makes a mistake the T will try to ask questions such as 'are you sure' in order to refrain from discouraging the S. The order for answering the question is random. After a S answers correctly the T will give out small hints and extra information such as new vocabulary, etc.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • Provide students with free practice of the target language.

T asks each of the students about the profession they would like to become again but this time in English. T listens S thoroughly and if the S is stuck and can't find the right word, T will help the S and ask him to repeat the sentence again.
