Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of have/ get something done, get someone to do something and do something yourself.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of having things done, to get someone to do something or do something yourself.


Lead - in (4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In order for students to set lesson context, I will put them in groups and have them discuss in 3 minutes the following question: Who changes the light bulb in your house? I think this will help students to try to guess what today´s lesson or topic is about.

Exposure - Gist task (5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening.

I will send students an audio, in which they´ll listen to different people talking about things they can do. In this case as a gist task, I will send students a document link with names of the characters and different actions. Students will have to listen to the audio and circle what each people can do. Example : CHARLOTTE - decorate a flat- replace a window - put new tiles up RICK - fix leaks - service a washing machine - do a basic car service JASON - fix a leak - service a boiler - put up a shelf. PAM- decorate the house - change light bulbs and batteries - check tyres

Intensive task (6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

For an intensive task to highlight the language, I will send students a document link with the transcript of the previous activity and they will have to read through to remember who said those sentences. WHO SAID THESE SENTENCES ? CHARLOTTE -RICK- JASON - PAM I USUALLY HAVE THE DECORATION DONE PROFESSIONALLY - I DO A LOTS OF THINGS MYSELF - I GET MY HUSBAND TO DO SOMETHING - NOW I´M HAVING THE KITCHEN PAINTED - I´LL GET THE GLASS REPAIRED SOMETIME THIS WEEK - I´VE HAD LOTS OF THINGS DONE RECENTLY -

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To cover MFP I will use guided discovery. I will send them into break out rooms and have students do a matching activity for the meaning in a document link, in which they have to match extracts from the listening a,b,c to definitions 1,2,3. 1. The speaker pays someone else to do the job. 2.The speaker does the job without any help from other people. 3.The speaker asks someone they know to do the job. If it´s a friend/ family , he /she probably doesn´t pay them. a) I USUALLY HAVE THE DECORATION DONE PROFESSIONALLY b) I GET MY HUSBAND TO DO SOMETHING c)I DO A LOT OF THINGS MYSELF After covering the meaning, in the same document, they will do a short fill in the gaps to complete the structure of the target language with past participle or to infinitive. SUBJECT + HAVE OR GET SOMETHING __________ SUBJECT + GET SOMEONE + __________+ SOMETHING. Pronunciation will be covered by showing them linkings, eliciting sentence stress and modeling pronunciation and asking for a chorus drill of some of the words.

Controlled Practice (6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will work individually , for this controlled practice they will receive a google form in which they have to fill in the gaps with the correct form of have/get and the correct form of the verb in parenthesis ( they will have multiple options in google forms) This will help me notice if there is something that needs to be explain again. Last year my husband wanted ________________the outside of the house __________________(painted). So as a surprise, I thought I´d ________________ my dad _______ (Come)and help me do it. Disaster! Dad fell off the ladder and hurt his leg. He had to __________it ______________(X-ray). Luckily, it wasn’t broken. But somehow the ladder broke three windows so we had to ______________those (mend).

Free Practice (8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Communicative task will be done as a free practice. Students will work in groups win which they will have to discuss what things they do themselves , have something done and get someone to do something in their houses.

Feedback and DEC (6 minutes)

Once students are done with their free practice, I will bring them back to the main room and asked them what their partners do themselves and have done or get someone to do something.
