Description

In this lesson, students challenge themselves to write a movie review. They will read and analyze a movie review. Develop their own critique of one of their favorite movies.

Materials

Abc Sample Movie Review

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a Film Review in the context of Movie

Subsidiary Aims

  • Analyze language to support description of movie in their writing

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • Develop context of lesson focusing on films

Open visual in PowerPoint slide focusing on film and ask some questions related to movies.

Focus on Organization of Film Review (5-6 minutes) • To breakdown film review and focus on key elements

1. Handout sample movie critique - Girl with a Pearl Earring 2. Have students read it 3. Work as a group to determine organization of critique

Focus on the Language (6-7 minutes) • Analyze key phrases from movie review for understanding

Show key sentences from film review and analyze with the class

Brainstorming Ideas (3-4 minutes) • To breakdown detail of a movie for students to write their own review

1. Provide handout to students for brainstorming 2. Work through example from Girl with Pearl Earring

Writing 1st Draft (8-10 minutes) • Students write first draft of film review in proper format

1. Provide handout to students 2. Give them time to write first draft of review of a film they liked

Writing - Final Draft (8-10 minutes) • Students revise critique to improve vocabulary and grammar

** Time permitting only 1. Students work in pairs and review each other's critiques 2. Students revise critique based on feedback

Feedback (6-8 minutes) • Students review critiques and select best one

1. Students post their critiques on wall 2. Students move around room to read reviews and analyze 3. Students mark any area of improvement - spelling & grammar 4. Vote for best one
