Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice connecting words (so, while, when, because) in the context of a celebrity story

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text focused on connecting words in the context of celebrity story

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce the Ss to topic by asking them to read questions related to the lesson topic I will display on a shared screen and eliciting answers and open classroom discussion. "How many of you have read a book that was turned into a movie?" I will model the first answer. "Did you like the movie more than the book? Why or why not?" "What are some common changes to movies that have been adapted from a book?"

Exposure (Text Work) (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

They will listen to the story of Anthony Hopkins. Ss will be shown the following questions: Where did Hopkins find the book? (On an empty bus seat) Who took the notes from the book? (The author, George Fiefer) Students will be put into pairs to discuss the answer. Next I will share answers in OCFB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I have prepared a slide to elicit the words from the Ss. After allowing students to identify correct words, I will introduce the 5 target connecting words on a powerpoint slide and go on to explain MFP in subsequent slides

Controlled Practice (11-13 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will use the prepared handout focused on the TL. Learners will do this individually and then check their answers with a partner in BOR. Answers and open class feedback will be offered following BOR

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be placed in BOR to consider and share stories from their experiences. Context: "Think of an interesting story that happened to you or someone you know. Make notes on these things." They will pay special attention to using connecting words in their stories. Students will work in BOR and I will monitor discussions, noting any errors and assisting with discussion and proper usage. Following BOR, I will bring students back to main classroom where I will have students share with me some of their sentences and phrases. I will offer feedback and error correction
