Main Aims

  • To provide writing practice in the context of writing a blog post in which students share favorite Christmas activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of Christmas vocabulary and linking conjunctions in the context of writing a blog post about favorite Christmas activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share Google slide with the discussion prompt "Have you ever spent Christmas in a different country? In BORs students in groups complete a matching quiz about Christmas traditions observed in various countries around the world. ICQ: How long do you have for quiz? (3 minutes) OCFB after activity.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful Christmas and linking language for coming writing task

Teacher shows prepared slide of Christmas vocabulary discovered on web search of seasonal activities observed in Mexico. Students brainstorm further ideas.

Exposure (9-10 minutes) • To provide a model of writing expected in coming task through reading an example of a blog post which will be the prompt for the students own work

Teacher plays an animated You Tube video (1:04) describing blogs Teacher shares Google Doc with a blog post modeling the target text that the students will reply to with their own work. Teacher shows Goggle Slide and elicits MF of specific linking words in model text. CCQ: see TLAS attached Teacher shows Jamboard with CCQs about the Blog writing form.

Productive Task( (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice writing a blog post in response to the model provided earlier.

Students individually write a blog post describing their favorite Christmas activities. Teacher provides clear instructions regarding time (7 min) and word limit (50-70). ICQ: How long do you have to write before another student reviews for feedback? (7 minutes) ICQ: How long should the blog post be (50-70 words) Students are assigned to provide feedback on another student's work in order to offer suggestions for reformulation and correction (3 minutes). Checklist provided as a guide with appropriate prompts. ICQ: How do you check you classmate's blog? (Use the checklist) How long do you have to do this? (3 minutes)

Feedback and Error Correction (8-9 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' written task.

Teacher and students discuss the content and feedback of blog posts Teacher highlights examples of good written form and language. Teacher and students collaborate on a few selected errors - reformulate and correct.
