Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific information and detail in the context of conversations at a party.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of words related to friendly conversations people usually have at a party.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will have students do a matching game for a cuople minutes; I will ask them to tell about the last party they went to as an initial question, and then, I will ask them follow up questions. When you go to a party, do you usually talk or you just stare? Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask sudents to listen to a text and just identify the main idea or context of the text for this, I will ask them to write on a piece of paper and as the audio plays try to answer the following questions, 1.What it is about? 2.Who is talking? 3.What's the reason of their conversation? 4.Is there a relationship between the speakers? This will be individual work.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will draw students' attention to the target language by asking them to work in pairs and match a series of questions from the text

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

We will talk about the usage and MFP of the word 'Whereabouts'. I will read a couple sentences outloud. I will give then examples of situations on which they can use the target language usin the questions: Where are you from? I am from _________ Really?, Whereabouts? Not far from_________ I will also ask my students to identify the difference in pronunciation between the word 'lawyer' and 'law' after I read them outloud since pronunciation can often be confused. I will model the word with the correct pronunciation . Choral drill to clarify problems with pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will tell the learners to hear an audio to listen for specific information and circle the correct word for their activity: I will show them how by doing the first sentence for them: 1. matt is carol's brother/husband 2. Natalia is from Spain/Brazil 3. Ben works with Matt/Carol. 4. Jackie is matt and carol'neighbor/boss 5. Liam is a lawyer/an accountant. 6. Amy is carol's sister/cousin The students will check their answers in pairs before OCFB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will listen to the audio for a second time and answer detail questions about the text; On the hand out they will tick the correct answer and they will correct the false sentences: 1. Natalia started her new job three weeks ago. 2. She goes back to Spain about four imes a year. 3. Ben lives near a park. 4. Jackie is a manager of a French restaurant. 5. Liam and Amy met at Carol and Matt's wedding. 6. Carol and Amy work for the same company. Students will check their answers in pairs or groups. i will check if audio needs to be played again before OCFB
