Journalism Jobs
Upper intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn new lexical sets related to journalism. The lesson starts with a game to circle the odd picture out. This is followed by a presentation of the new words through pictures. Finally, there is some controlled practice through a matching exercise and a less guided practice followed by a free practice via final role-play speaking activity.

Materials

Abc pictures / handouts

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of editor, reporter, photographer in the context of journalism

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss play a circle the odd-one-out game. They circle the picture which is not related to journalism.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows Ss a picture of a photographer and asks Ss what the person in the picture is doing. T tries to elicit the word from Ss. T does the same thing with the rest of the words.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T tells Ss the English word for the picture and drills.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T writes the words on the board, shows the placement of the stress and the kind of the word.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss match the words with their definitions. They do a peer check before the teacher gives feedback to the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss fill in the gaps using any of the jobs they have learned to complete the questions. Then, they take turns asking and answering the questions in pairs. T asks each pair what the reply of their partner is.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss work in pairs acting out an interview process between an applicant and a manager of a news agency hiring photographers, reporters, and editors. T asks one or two pairs to act out the interview in front of the whole class.
