Description

In this lesson, students will put themselves in the life of a film character and talk about what they did the day before (film character). It will be more of a Boomerang type of lesson where teacher will test Ss strengths and weaknesses then 'Teach' regular & irregular verbs using target language as they studied the past simple tense in a previous session and then 'Test' students at the end and have freer practice where students will be at a party still as a film character and use target language to ask questions and to answer each other.

Materials

Abc PowerPoint presentation

Main Aims

  • • To provide learning and practice of regular and irregular verbs in the past simple tense in the context of 'a day in the life of a famous film character'

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide fluency in speaking practice using target language as freer discussion in the context of 'a day in the life of a film character'

Procedure

Engage (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will greet the class and present the learning outcomes. Teacher will tell the ss that they will play a "guess who" game. She presents a picture upside down on the PPT , puts a big question mark and writes "GUESS WHO?". Teacher elicits answers from the ss for a while and then shows the picture. Teacher says today he will be Harry Potter and talk about " what he did yesterday . 3 – 5

Activate #1 (4-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language and detect the Ss strength and weaknesses in vocabulary/grammar

Teacher pretend to be Harry Potter and says what he did yesterday. She presents a picture after each sentence. She then turns to the class and wants them to choose to be a famous film character. Ss will present their character to their friends and then they will present what they did yesterday (at least three sentences). Teacher monitors the ss. She will not interrupt or correct any mistakes at this stage. T-S 5

Study Regular & Irregular verbs in the simple past tense (5-7 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T clarifies that they're talking about "yesterday" and will revise 'past simple' tense write on WB. She will elicit the regular and irregular verbs from Ss by writing two different groups and then Teacher gives or elicits examples for each group. (played, watched, listened, walked) then asks what they all have in common, elicits they all have -ed at the end and highlights in different color on PPT or maybe get a S to come up highlight this. Teacher elicits or writes some examples for irregular group as well. ( ate, came, slept, bought, went) and asks what the difference could be. T-S, S-S, PW 15 – 15

Activate #2 (3-4 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Ss will now again role play that they are in a party and they will ask each other what they did yesterday in the life of their chosen film character (make sure they're using TL). Teacher will give FB to see if their answers from the first test were similar to this time and compare in pairs. Ss will also have the verbs on the wall to help them and what they learnt in previous stage. 6 – 6
