Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of achievements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for comparing ideas in the context of achievements

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To help students contextualise the lesson

T greets Ss T shows a jamboard slide with some pictures and the question "What is the Greatest Engineering Achievement of the 20th Century?". T sends Ss to BORs for two minutes where they will discuss their ideas. Then T asks some Ss his/her opinion

Content Preparation (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the content of the task.

T shows a jamboard slide with some statements about electricity and cars. The statements use some expressions that Ss will learn later in the lesson. T asks some Ss if they agree or disagree. Ss asks a few Ss for their opinion

Language Preparation (5-6 minutes) • To review the language needed and to clarify the meaning, the form and pronunciation of the language needed for the task.

Meaning: T shows a slide with some expressions and some definitions T asks Ss to match the expressions to their meanings. T ask some specific Ss to participate and answer Form: T shows the expressions and the patterns that follow them T asks: What is after expression 1? Ss may answer: "a complete sentence" T asks a Ss to read the expression with the example T: "What about expression 2?, What's next?" Ss:" a verb" T: "what about expression 3? How can we use it?" Ss: "After a complete idea or series of ideas" T points out the fourth expression and asks: "What kind of sentence is this?" Ss may answer: "a conditional" T: "What type of conditional?" Ss: "Sencond conditional" Pronuciation: T shows a new slide T ask "What kind of words do we normally stress?" Ss may answer: "verbs, nouns, etc" T points out to the note on top of the slide and asks one Ss to read it Then T reads the two examples and asks some Ss to read them so they can practice

Speaking (15-20 minutes) • To provide opportunity to practice speaking fluency and expand on what’s been learned.

T shows a jamboard slide with the question: "Can you imagine life without these people? T says the names of the people and one of their achievements T tells Ss they are going to discuss this question in groups T also gives Ss some Useful Language they can use to express their ideas. Ss are sent to BORs for 9 min. T monitors the different BORs and takes notes. When time is finished. T makes new groups with different people so they can re engage in the discussion and don't get bored. Ss continue practicing fluency for 9 min. Again, T monitors and take notes.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To provide learners with feedback and inform them of how they did with regards to content and language used.

T gives feedback on good language. T uses Jamboard to write and correct some mistakes made during the speaking activity. T asks if there are any questions left. If there are, T addresses them. T thanks students for their time.
