Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of a conversation with peers planning a 30 day challenge

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of grammar and vocabulary in the context of an audio conversation in which 2 people plan a 30 day challenge

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will play the TED-Ed YouTube video of Matt Cutts who became well known for launching the idea of 30 day challenges to improve one's life. T instructs students to write down some of the challenges that Matt undertook.

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming speaking task through listening to an audio.

Students go to BORs in groups to listen to an audio conversation and complete the attached table describing Mia and Dino's planned 30 day challenges. ICQ: Do you work alone or in groups? (groups) How long do you have for this activity? (7 min) T elicits answers following and clarifies when necessary.

Useful Language (9-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming speaking practice.

T elicits from S the MFPA of 5 useful phrases heard in the audio conversation. T clarifies and reviews same on Google Slides. T elicits from students ideas for 30 day challenges and records them on a Google slide for all to see. Which of these were heard in the stories? T shares prepared Google Slide with several potential 30 day challenges which may be useful for upcoming task. T reviews MFPA of select items (30 day challenges).

Productive Task (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for speaking practice

Students go to BOR in groups with the task to imagine they are going to do the 30 day challenge. What are they going to do? T provides some questions as well as the examples of useful lexis discussed in the lesson via a link to a Word document.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' speaking task and use of language

T elicits imagined 30 day challenges from students and provides DEC on 2 items
