Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice for fluency in the context of describing a place. By the end of the class learners will be able to use There is and there are to describe places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of there is and there are.
  • To provide review of places and things.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show slide #1. Ask Ss to mention what they see in the picture. The picture shown will be a room with simple vocabulary such as books, window, bed, etc. This will help students spot things in a picture and will also help them mention both singular and plural things which will be useful later on. After having Ss mention what they see, show a picture with the name. Place strong emphasis on which words are plural and which ones singular.

Exposure (6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show slide #3. Tell Ss to look at the picture. Tell Ss to mention what they see, but just in a general way. Give them a model sentence, 'I see people', 'I see a tree', etc. Tell Ss they will listen to two descriptions of the picture. They only need to pay attention to the information and decide whether the correct description is A or B. ICQ Will you listen to one or two descriptions? One ICQ Do you need to write anything? No. Conduct OCFB

Useful Language (6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Show slide #4. Ss will see the picture again and next to it some model sentences which were mentioned in the correct description. Go slightly over Meaning and Form since it will be important for them to use things correcly in the productive task. CCQ Do we use There is with singular or plural? Productive Task(s) (20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show Jamboard. Tell Ss to look at the pictures. Tell them they will need to talk to their groups for about 6 minutes. Tell Ss they need to describe the pictures using the cues shown on the screen. Tell Ss they need to describe everything they see. Tell Ss they will need to add some extra information like size, color, opinion, etc. ICQ Do you need to write or speak?
