Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about English as a global language. This text provides information about the growth of English as a global language for business and discusses the changes that the language is undergoing in that context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of words that support the understanding of the chosen text. in the context of English as a global language for business

Procedure

Lead In (5-6 minutes) • To engage students in the topic

Slide 1: Show students the slide and ask them to share their thoughts on the picture and the captions. Encourage participation by asking for input from individuals. 2 min Slide 2: Ask students to discuss the questions on the slide in BORs. 3 min

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To allow students to learn the meanings of words in context

Show the word without the definition. Ask for student input regarding the meaning or use in a sentence. Reveal the definition and correct any misconceptions regarding the meaning. 4 mins

While Reading task #1 (10-12 minutes) • To read for gist and general information

Students will read the passage individually from the slide or the Word doc. Students will answer the questions from the General Questions slide individually as they read. in BORs students will compare answers to general questions. If there is extra time, I will reveal the paragraph headings for the reading passage and ask students to share where they believe is the placement for those.

While-Reading task #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference tasks

Students will return to the group and be given instructions for the Locate and Restate slide. They will reread the passage for detail and a deeper understanding while they locate and restate the sentences from the text individually. Students will check answers in BORs with peers.

Post-Reading Response to Text (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Return to main group. Ask students to tell where they found the text quotes (which paragraph) and ask them to restate. Accept volunteers and call on the reluctant in turns. If time permits ask students to respond to the questions posed on the Globish slide. Use this time to get feedback and do delayed error correction.
