In this lesson Ss will improve reading for gist and detail with a lesson about context in the news.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice in the context of the news.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary used in context of the news.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss following questions: What are available sources of news? (eg. Reading physical paper, reading online news, watching news TV program, word-of-mouth) How do you get your news? I will ask students to write into chat following question: What news (politics, sports, headlines, crime, personals, comics etc) is of interest to you, and why?

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will ask introduce the vocab pre teach words I selected: ATTENDANT, DESCRIPTION, REALIZED. I will ask to tell me their familiarity with those words and then I will elicit definitions from the Ss. from the Ss to read the following sentences and answer the questions that follow them. Then I will provide my definition for the words and have the students read the sentences I prepared. I will follow with the CCQ. MEANING 1) The flight ATTENDANT provided our section with soft drinks and snacks. CCQ: Did the people on the plane get refreshments? Who gave people the refreshments? 2) The man provided a DESCRIPTION of the cat to his friend. CCQ: Did the man know the color of the cat? Did the man know what the cat looked like? 3) I REALIZED I loved football after I scored my first goal. CCQ: Does the writer like football? How does the writer know they like football? Did the writer know they loved football before the goal? FORM: I will ask Ss what part of speech each word is. Attendant : Noun, Attend: Verb. Description, Noun. Describe: Verb. Realized: Past Simple Verb. Students will write their answers in the chat box. ATTENDANT: I will explain the ATTENDANT is noun/person. There are different adj that help identify an ATTENDANT'S role, eg, Flight ATTENDANT or Parking ATTENDANT. "Can I please speak to the front desk attendant? "The parking attendant validated my ticket" "I am a flight attendant. Explain that Attend is the V version of that word. Give example. DESCRIPTION: Can you please describe the car? You gave us a good description of the car. You are describing him perfectly! Describe is the V. Give example. REALIZED: I realize I miss you. I realized I missed her. At that moment I had a clear realization, I miss her. PRONUNCIATION: I will model the highlighted word and stress the correct pronunciation. I will ask Ss to drill.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read the three stories quickly and pick the correct title of each of them. I will give my students 4 minutes and this will be individual work. If they finish early I will instruct them to come up with their own, alternative headline. Ss will share some of their titles with a partner in a private message during final 2 minutes.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read the text and decide if the following are T or F and give evidence of their answer. I will read the first question to the class and ask if there are any questions, and if they can identify if the answer is true or false. After my modeling, they will work independently to answer the questions. They will check their answers with their partner in a breakout room starting after 7-8 minutes of individual work. After the break out room session, I will bring them back and check their understanding by displaying the correct answers on the screen and ask there are any further questions. 1. Anna was playing loud music when ticketed by the attendant. 2. The traffic department had to pay Anna instead of Anna having to pay a fine. 3. Anna explained why she was stopped and the attendant let her go. 4. The police never caught the man.. 5. The robber stole a wallet. 6. The woman got a good look at the robber and was able to explain what he looked like. 7. The man got away with the bank robbery. 8.The man was surprised by how much money he stole. 9. The robber made a mistake that led to his capture.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask my students to discuss the following questions and they will discuss them together in breakout rooms. 1. Describe a time when you were unfairly treated or wrongly accused. Talk about your feelings when you were wrongly accused and how the situation was resolved. 2. Have you have been robbed? Do you know someone that has been? Tell your partner about the experience. Make sure to discuss your how this experience made you feel. 3. Think of some of the dumbest criminal actions you can remember or you have heard or read about. Share with your partner the story and in what way the criminal made mistakes. Finally I will bring back students and debrief lesson and correct any errors I heard during the class.
