Description

In this lesson, the ss learn about the vocabulary related to technology and machines through speaking activities. The lesson starts with a brainstorm of how machines and technology have changed the world and if they have made it a better or worse place and the ss categorise the words and the phrases into the word groups (ex. 1b) and T introduces a vocabulary related to the topic. This is followed by two exercises. Firstly, the students re-group the words if needed after pre-taught vocabulary. In the second exercise (1c), the ss add more words to each category in pairs and change the partners to check the other pairs' additional words. Finally, as a follow-up speaking activity, the ss choose one category in groups of 3-4 and think about if we really need them or we can live without them. T monitors and takes notes of good and bad usage of the functional language.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of technical words in the context of technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and discussion in the context of technology

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Brainstorm: Ask the ss ''What do you think about technology?" - "How have machines and technology changed the world?" - "Have they made it better or worse?" The ss have a quick brainstorm of these questions and share their ideas with each other. The ss are introduced to the context of the lesson.

Introduce the Context/ Pre-teach (6-8 minutes) • To introduce and interest the ss in the words/phrases about technology

Firstly, Tell the ss to read the words/phrases in the box alone and then group them into 4 categories on the papers with different colors in PAIRS. Do one as an example if needed. The ss read the words and phrases in the box and categorise them into the word groups on the papers under each title given by T. Monitor but DON'T give F/B. Secondly, Pre-teach vocabulary: vaccination (n.) - vacuum cleaner (n.) - commercial aeroplane (n.) - solar power (n.) - communication satellite (n.) Create situations, use your gestures and show photos.

Vocabulary Practice #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to revise and practice the pre-taught vocabulary

Ask them to read the the words/phrases in the box again and try to put them into the correct categories this time in PAIRS. The ss read the words/phrases again and try to categorise them correctly. The ss will revise the vocabulary by the help of this activity. F/B: Write the answers on four different colored papers, stick them on the board and the ss come and check the correct answers together.

Vocabulary Practice #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to practice and enhance the vocabulary related to technology through a more challenging activity,

Ask the ss to think of some more words for each categories in PAIRS. The ss try to add words to the titles and then change their partners to check other pairs' words. Monitor the ss. F/B: T puts the titles on the board. One student from each pairs comes to the board and write the words they have added to each category. Correct the errors if necessary.

Follow-up (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for the students to develop their speaking skills, respond to the vocabulary and expand on what they've learned

Divide the ss into two groups, tell them they will choose one category and think about if we really need them or we can live without them. The ss choose one category and share their ideas with their partners. Then they discuss their ideas with each other (agree or disagree).
