Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Online Dating

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a profile-match-making exercise in the context of online dating

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students are shown questions related to online dating from exercise 1, page 36. Do you know anyone who uses the internet to make friends? Do you think that the internet is a good way to meet people? What are the advantages and disadvantages of internet dating? The students are asked to work in pairs in Break Out Rooms. Feedback is held in Open Class Forum.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

The students are asked to read the questions in reading exercise 1 page 36. How old is Lynn? Does she have any children? What is her job? What does she do in her free time? What adjectives does she use to describe her personality? What adjectives does she use to describe her perfect partner? What does her perfect partner enjoy doing? Teacher tells the students to read the text and answer the questions individually. Teacher sends the students to Break Out rooms to compare answers. Feedback is done once the students return to the main room, in open class forum.

While Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Teacher tells the students they will be divided into three groups and work on 3 different texts, the teacher nominates each student and tells him/her which group he/she belongs to. The students then read the text they are assigned and tick the sentences from the given list which describe the man in the text. Each group is asked to write the number of the chosen sentences in the chatbox for feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are asked to discuss which one of the three man described in the texts is the best partner for Lynn. Each student is asked to underline his good points and bad points. Students are then asked to compare each man and decide which one suits Lynn best.
