Description

This is a systems lesson focused on grammar through a text-based approach to introduce and practice countable and uncountable nouns.

Materials

Abc A New Home Presentation

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of countable vs. uncountable nouns in the context of rooms and things in a house.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary - as well as fluency speaking practice - in the context of rooms and things in a house.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. I will ask my students several questions about homes: a. What is your home like? b. Would you like to move into a new home?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. Present instructions - 1 minute 2. Students will read a short ad about a flat for rent. (1-2 minutes) 3. Students will then be shown a picture in which they will need to identify the five rooms they just read about. (2 minutes) 4 Give answers 5. We will then look at the picture again, this time to identify the numbered items 1 - 20 (3 minutes) 6.Give/review answers (2 minutes)

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

How much space? How many beds? Were there some arm chairs? Was there any furniture?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

(Clarify meaning, form and pronunciation) 1. MEANING I will present target language: How much space? (used with an uncountable noun) How many beds? (used with a countable noun) Were there some armchairs? Was there any furniture? Was there a bath? CCQ’s If I’m talking about plants, do I use much or many? Why? If you want to talk about money, is it much or many? Why? Do you use some when sentence is positive or negative? Do you use any when sentence is positive or negative? What do all these words describe? Quantity (how many) 2. FORM What is the structure of the grammar point? I will ask students to identify the commonality of the target language. Much, Many, Some, Any are all adjectives in this case (descriptive words describing quantity) A is an indefinite article. 3. PRONUNCIATION I will be reading the sentences out loud as examples, and reviewing word stress.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Getting familiar with target language. 7 question scavenger hunt for controlled practice. Instructions + Demo I will ask students to answer all seven questions either individually or in teams, depending on attendance. I will ask students to compare answers, then I will share answer key and help with any questions.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Conversation oriented activities Demo then BOR - I will ask students to role play - one is the estate agent, the other a potential renter. They will play the roles of each, the buyer asking questions using the target language -"how many bathrooms, how much money, etc. and the agent will answer. Then they will switch roles. Need to come up with examples of target language using their own creativity and experiences, and check work with their partner. I will monitor / write potential mistakes for DEC/feedback.
