Description

In this lesson students main focus is on their receptive skills of reading and sub skills of gist reading and detailed reading tasks. Students sub aim is speaking. The context of this lesson is birthdays. Students will have a warm-up activity discussing their best ever birthday and their plans for their next birthday. Students will be taught pre-taught key vocabulary by matching these words to the pictures to better understand the text. Students will practice gist reading by having to choose between 3 headlines that best fit the article. Students will practice the skill of reading for meaning. Students will then have a speaking task at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic

Teacher to introduce the topic of birthdays with the aim of generating interest in the reading lesson. Teacher to say its my birthday next month. Teacher to elicit Happy Birthday from students. Teacher to give handout with these short discussion questions. Are birthdays important? Whats the best birthday you've ever had? How will you celebrate your next birthday? Students to work in pairs and discuss.

Pre-teach vocabulary (9-10 minutes) • To pre-teach/unblock key lexis needed to help students understand the text and complete the task

Teacher to state aim of today's lesson which is reflective skills- reading. Teacher to say before we can read we need to make sure of some words. Teacher to show slide with 7 images and instruct students that they need to match 7 words to these images. Teacher to ask students to work in pairs. Teacher gives handout containing the images then handouts the 7 words that are going to be unblocked in lesson. Students to work with each other and check their answers. Teacher monitors activity by walking around. Teacher to go through the meaning of any new words and check pronunciation and stress with students as a class at the end of the pair work.

Reading for Gist (6-7 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for gist/general understanding.

Teacher to handout gist-reading task. There are 6 stages of Maria's life. Students have to gist read and match the stages to the paragraphs.Teacher to provide 90 seconds for this task as it's a long article containing 8 paragraphs in total. Students to work in pairs to check they have understood the gist for each section. Teacher to check for errors after each section.

Reading for specific information (1-2 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information (scanning)

Only one question students can read for scanning and that is a weak scanning question at best but will do it anyway. Will write this question on the board and ask students as a class to answer. Questions is How long were Maria and Tom married? Answer is 42 years. The other question is What were Maria's parents names?

Reading for detailed information (10-11 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension

Teacher to now get students to practice reading for detailed comprehension. Students to work in new pairs and answer the questions from the handout given. The handout also includes putting the topics in the article in the correct order and check with their partner.

Post-Reading / Speaking Task (9-11 minutes) • To allow an opportunity to react to the text and develop oral fluency on the topic

Students will be given instructions to work in pairs. There will be student a and student b questions based on the text. Each partner takes it in turns to ask and discuss.
