Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a (short) letter of complaint

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to practice their reading skills by reading a sample of a letter of complaint

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share screen of Google Slides and have students think about is happening in the photos. Nominate 2-3 Ss to give ideas. Ask Ss if they have ever been in a similar situation. Nominate 1 Ss to respond.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Instruct Ss to think about 2 (gist) questions while they read a sample of a letter of complaint: What am I complaining about? How do I want it resolved? Give Ss 1-2 min to read and then nominate 2 Ss to respond to the gist questions. After discussing content, instruct Ss to think about the parts of the letter with a worksheet. Give them 1-2 min to complete on their own. Then put them in BOR to discuss with peers for 2 mins. Share Answer Key on screen once back in the main room and ask if there are any questions.

Useful Language (3-4 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Display the email on the screen again and ask Ss to identify which phrases I used to show my frustration (I was shocked, I am disappointed, It is unacceptable)... Nominate 2-3 Ss to respond. After Ss have self-identified useful phrases, show the list of semi-fixed phrases they can use. Ask if they have any questions about meaning of any of the phrases. Send as a PDF in the chat as a resource during the writing stage.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Instruct Ss that they will write their own letter of complaint to a business. They can use the scenario they talked about at the beginning or choose another. Instruct them to type it (instead of hand writing) so that they can share it later. Give 8-10 minutes to complete task. After 8-10 minutes (depending on timing), instruct Ss to that they will share their letters with their peers by sharing their screen in BOR rooms. Open BORs and monitor each room, taking notes for feedback stage.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Copy notes from SS speech into google slide and go through each sentence one by one with students. Be sure to include both good and bad examples from multiple students to error correct without damaging confidence.
