Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the past simple tense. After the lead-in, I will expose them to a dialogue between 2 people who talk about what they did the day before. I will introduce them to the TL thanks to a gist task related to the audio. Based on this dialogue, I will cover MPF so students can practice past simple (CP). The lesson will end with a freer practice stage that aims practising the TL by speaking.

Materials

Abc Audio - Past tense
Abc Docx (CP) - Option 1

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of past simple in the context of memories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using an audio about past simple.
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a class conversation in the context of past simple.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic.

1. Do you have a good memory ? Yes or No 2. What do you remember from your summer holidays for example ? This summer I went back to France. I remember that I had a great time with my cousins. It was very nice !

Exposure (5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows questions and plays audio: Man: What did you do yesterday? Woman: Nothing much. I just stayed at home and cleaned the house. Man: How boring! Woman: Yeah, it was. And you? What did you do? Man: I drove to the mountains and went hiking. Woman: That sounds fun! Man: It was. I had a great time. Gist task (3'): Answer the following questions: a) What were the man and the woman talking about ? A: About what they did the day before. b) Who had a boring day ? The woman c) What did the man do ? He went hiking in the mountains.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Woman: Nothing much. I just s…….. at home and c……... the house. T: Do you remember what the woman said ? (Play audio if necessary).

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING: 1' I stayed at home and cleaned the house. CCQs: → Is it past, present or future ? Past → When in the past ? Yesterday. → Is she still cleaning the house ? No → Can I replace yesterday by ‘last month’ ? Yes → Does it change the meaning ? No T: We use the past simple to talk about completed / finished actions / events in the past. FORM: 2’ REGULAR VERBS: I clean the house. I cleaned the house. CCQs: → What is the difference ? What do you notice -ed at the end of the verb. For regular verbs, we add -ed. (+examples.) IRREGULAR VERBS: I drive to the mountains. I d______ to the mountains. (drove) I drived to the moutains. CCQs: → Do you remember what the man said ? → Is sentence 3 correct ? → Here, can we add -ed ? No T: The whole verb changes. For irregular verbs, we don’t add -ed, the past form changes completely. (+ Examples) T: How do I know when to add -ed or not ? Well you have to learn them. There are no rules. But don’t worry, today we will just focus on some of them. PRONUNCIATION: Affirmative / Negative / Interrogative: 4' Ask students to find an affirmative sentence in the dialogue. I just stayed at home and cleaned the house. Emphasize difference in the sound -ed for 'stayed' (steɪd) nd 'cleaned' (klind) and 'worked' (wərkt) + stress. Turn the sentences into negative: I didn't stay at home. CCQs: > What do you notice ? > Is the verb stay with -ed ? > Why ? + Pronunciation. T: For negative statements, just add did not or didn’t before the base verb. T: Can you identify a question in the dialogue ? What did you do yesterday ? Pronunciation + intonation + linking. CCQs: > Is the verb 'do' with ed ? > Why ?
