Description

This is a productive skills lesson, with the focus on speaking fluency.

Materials

Abc PowerPoint presentation for TP5 - A Dream Holiday

Main Aims

  • To provide
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of planning a dream holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about a couple discussing their holiday plans with a travel agent.
  • To provide practice of holiday words and expressions of preference.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show Ss ppt. slide entitled Dream Holiday - showing different images. I shall invite them to tell me what they think a dream holiday is. I shall quickly ask them to give me an alternative for the word 'holiday' as this is British English and they may be more familiar with 'vacation.' I will then show ppt. slide 2 - Examples of Holidays - to elicit more ideas.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show PPT. 3 and tell Ss they are going to listen to two people - a couple - talking about their holiday plans with a travel agent. Check understanding of the term 'travel agent.' First, tell them they will hear two phrases that are useful in talking about holidays. Show PPT 4 - 'self-catering' and 'last-minute' with image prompts. Move to PPT slide 5, which shows they have to listen for two of the names of the holiday destinations that are mentioned in the listening tape. Tell them they should take notes. They will hear the tape just once and have two minutes for the task. In FB ask them for their answers and bring up PPT 6.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Show PPT slides 7-12 in succession, modelling and drilling (for sound, stress and intonation) the following 5 useful phrases. 1. I don't mind. I just feel like a break somewhere nice. 2. Somewhere far away. A complete getaway. 3. I just want to chill out on a beach. 4. I much prefer to eat out. 5.. I really love sightseeing.

Productive Task(s) (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Explain to Ss in open class that they will work in pairs (or group of 3 if odd number) and ask each other questions about their idea holiday - like the travel agent and the couple on the tape. Provide them with useful language slides via the chat then into breakout rooms. They will do this speaking task twice - in different pairings - so two different breakout rooms. Each time they will have up to 4 minutes. If time allows, they will do a third speaking session in a different pairing.

Feedback and Error Correction (10-12 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Having gathered data for DEC while monitoring the breakout rooms, I will use the Zoom whiteboard for FB and DEC. At first I will ask for individual FB from S on what they found out about one of their partners. Then I will write up some of the errors I heard during the breakout sessions. I will ask the Ss if they think the example is correct, then invite a correct version. I will suggest the SS can write down the corrected versions.
