Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Modal verbs : should vs must in the context of going to dinner at someone's house

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of modal verbs should and must in the context of real life situations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Lead-in (1 minute) - Students are asked" Remember the first time you were invited to have dinner with your in-laws. How did you feel?" (nervous, happy) - Students are showed two images on screen and asked " Did you use good manners at the table?" (yes) "Is this what you must do?" (no) You mustn't eat with your hands. "Is this what you should do? (yes) You should pay attention to your in-laws’ conversation. TASK (2 minutes) - Students are asked " Listen and answer: What advice did Isabel get from her friend?" POST-TASK (2 minutes) - Some students are nominated and encouraged to share their responses - Teacher write some of ss answers on the screen. - Students are provided with delayed error correction (DEC) if necessary

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

SETTING THE STAGE (1 minute) - Students are told to answer an intensive task. - Students are told they will listen to some sentences from the prevoius dialogue and they will identify the /t/ sound and the TL. TASK (3 minutes) -Students are asked identify the /t/ sound and the TL from a dialogue that they listened at the beginnig of the lesson individually. - Students are shown a demonstration . - Students are sent the link of the task by chat. - Students will identify the TL and MFA. - Students are asked to check their answers with the Answer Key shared on the screen. - Students are provided with delayed error correction (DEC) if necessary.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Students are presented with some expressions (target language) from the previous task and are asked to pay attention to the use and form of the phrases on Google Presentation.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Students are presented with some expressions (target language) from the previous task and are asked to pay attention to the meaning, pronunciation, stress sound of them by doing individual and choral drill on Google Presentation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Students are asked to fill the gaps of some sentences with the target language ( should, shouldn't, must and mustn't) individually. - Students are shown a demonstration . - Students are sent the link of the task by chat. - Students are asked to check their answers with a classmate on BOR and then come back to the main room.. - Students are asked to check their answers with the Answer Key shared on the screen. - Students are provided with delayed error correction (DEC) if necessary.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Students are asked to : Give some advice to your classmates to avoid COVID - 19 - Students are asked to think four advice statements to start brainstorming ideas to share with their classmates. - Students are asked to use TL learned during the lesson. (Must, mustn’t, should, shouldn’t) - Students are told they will be sent to breakout rooms after so they can share their email to a classmate by sharing their advice. (4 minutes) - Students are provided with delayed error correction (DEC) when they come back to the main room.
