Description

In this lesson, the students are exposed to new vocabulary through a listening text about Scotland and its culture. The students also get to use their speaking skills, both reading for gist and detail, through some related exercises. There is some free semi-controlled speaking at the end, regarding Scotland again.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about colour and names in the context of Scottish culture

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Scottish colours and names in the context of culture

Procedure

Lead in (7-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1.T puts the picture of the scottish guy on the WB and draws a flag of scotland. T asks where is he from, where is Scotand, what famous places are there in Scotland (glasgow, edinburgh, islands, highlands), what is its relationship to england, what is his name (scottish preferabley), what does he eat (haggis), what does he drink (whiskey), what music does he play (bagpipes), what game does he play (tree log throwing), what else is in scotland????? 2.Stick them all on the board around the guy 3.Write **** is from Scotland, he is scottish, he is a Scot

Vocabulary 1 (5-6 minutes) • To re-introduce vocabulary in preparation for detail listening activity

1.T instructs there are 9 colours being read out 2.Ss must write down which ones they hear 3.After recording, PW to correct each other and then play recrding again 4.Ss feedback answers 1-9

Vocabulary 2 (5-6 minutes) • To visualise material

1.T shows PPT slide 2.T numbers them in order on the WB 3.T instructs that the recording will state each tartan in a different order. 4.Ss must number them correctly individually. 5.PW for 2nd playback 6.WC feedback

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To pre-teach words and prepare students for listening exercises

T explains the colours from previous exercise are tartan 1.ellicit tartan and kilt (add kilt picture to WB) (draw tartan) 2.Concept check tartan and kilt 3.Drill tartan and kilt 4.Write tartan and kilt

Gist Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

1.Instuct the Ss to listen to the excerpt 2.Write the following questions...how many people are speaking, is this an interview or conversation, what is it about, are they talking in the present, past or future? 3.Demo the first question. 4.give ICQs 5.Ss work indivdually first, then in pairs for the second time. 6.WC FB

Detailed Listening (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

1.Teacher instructs that Ss will listen to 2 excerpts 2.Students must work in different pairs and circle the correct answer in each row 3.Demo the first one....circle dundee. 4.Give a couple of ICQs 5.Give them the HO

Speaking (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to expand on their listening and vocabulary and interact

1.Instruct students that they will receive another handout 2.When everyone has a HO, they must stand up and ask the questions on it to each other 3.demo one of the questions 4.ICQ a couple of things 5.Give them the HO 6.Ss talk about their findings afterwards
