In this lesson, after learning the target vocabulary, students have the opportunity to improve their reading skills through tasks for reading for gist and reading for details. If time is enough, Ss'll discuss about a question and they will touch on speaking practice a little.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and gist reading practice using a text about the most influential technological advances of the past hundred years in the context of technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the words in the article in the context of technology


Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To focus students on technology.

Teacher gives each student a handout presenting several technological devices. Ss look at them and discuss with his/her partner to guess what they are about. Then, teacher elicits the answer and gives feedback. Ss discuss these two questions in pairs. Is technology really important?Why? Teacher nominates a student in each pair to share their ideas.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To provide clarification about some possibly unknown words in the article

The target vocabulary is from the article and they are 'shrink, fabric,amplifier, influential, advance, commercial, affordable' . These words are possible unknown by the students. Teacher elicit the meaning through short,simple and clear definitions, synonyms, examples, a context, Then the teacher uses CCQs to check whether the meanings are understood. The student drill the vocabulary and after this step, teacher writes the words on the board. Type of the words and stress are presented. In the end, teacher gives Ss handouts and ask student to match the words written in the handout with meanings which are on the doors out of the classroom. Ss go out of the classroom, check the meanings and match them with the words. Ss check their answers in pairs. Teacher gives FB if necessary.

Prediction Task for Reading (1-2 minutes) • To focus on the reading and predict what the article is about?

Ss look at the title, picture for 10 seconds and discuss what the article is about in pairs. Then they share their ideas with the whole class.

Reading for Gist (4-5 minutes) • To enable students to find the general ideas or points in the article through skimming.

Teacher gives clear instrucitons and ask the question 'Which inventions does the article talk about?' Students skim the article in a minute individually and share the ideas in pairs. They share ideas with the whole classas well. Teacher gives FB at the end.

While-reading Task (15-20 minutes) • To give opportunities to Ss to read the article to find out specific details

Teacher gives clear instructions about the task and present some titles. Students read the article to find the appropriate title for each paragraph individually. Then peer check. Teacher gives feedback (Task1). After this activity, Teacher gives instructions again and presents the questions. Ss read the article individually again to answer these questions. They check the answers in pairs and look for the answers on the wall. Teacher nominates a student to share his/her answer with whole class.(Task 2)

Post-reading (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to discuss about the article further and share their persoonal ideas about the topic.

Teacher gives instructions clearly first and present the question. Students discuss the question in groups. Teacher observes, monitors the students and note some personal ideas. At the end of discussion, teacher nominates one student from each group. This student shares the group's idaes with the whole class.
