Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to express their likes and dislikes. For the exposure task, students will complete a 'fill-in the gaps' exercise based on a dialogue. After, that, I will cover MFP of the TL so students can realize a CP task (Choose the correct option). Students will check their answers in pairs and I will provide feedback. Finally, students will practice their speaking skills with a partner and share their ideas with the class.

Main Aims

  • To practice and revise functional language to talk about likes and dislikes.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a "Ask and Guess" activity in the context of likes and dislikes.
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about likes and dislikes

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Q1: What are things that a lot of people don’t like but that you like ? T: For example: People don’t like cold water. When they take a shower, it’s a good hot shower. When they go to the beach, the water must be warm. I’m the opposite. I really like cold water because it energizes me. Q2: What are things that a lot of people like but that you don’t like ? T: For example, a lot of people like rap. In France, we have this rapper called JUL, he is very famous but I don't listen to him because I don’t like rap music. T: Now your turn! Think about something you like but people don’t like or the other way around...

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

On presentation, I show a dialogue. Students have 2' to read it. (2') Gist task: fill-in the gaps (5'): Some parts of the dialogue are missing. Students have to remember and fill-in the gaps. We do the first one together. T: Do you remember what Mary said ? I hate washing the dishes. Any Qs? You have 5'. Feedback: (1')

Language Clarification (MFP) (8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T: In the dialogue, what do Mary and Amy express? S: Likes and dislikes. MEANING: 2' Jambaord - Scale T: Let's put the verbs in order from 1 to 7. FORM: 2' T: How do we express likes and dislikes ? Look at the following sentences: (sentences appear) 1. I like books. CCQ: What are 'books' ? Noun, adjective? S: A noun 2. I like reading. CCQ: What is 'reading' ? An adjective, a verb ? S: A verb What do you notice at the end of the verb? S: -ing T: With the phrases from the Jamboard, we can use a noun or verb + ing. PRONUNCIATION: (3-4') T: Let's take a look at the following sentences from the dialogue: I hate washing the dishes. CCQs: Where is the stress ? Does the intonation fall or rise ? Break sentence in different parts to make pronunciation easier. Same procedure for other sentences.

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Google form - choose the correct option. (5') - 6 sentences about likes and dislikes. - Students have to choose the correct option. - Individual work. We do the first one together. I provide students a summary if they have doubts. Peer-to-peer checking (3-4') Once students have finished the exercise, I send them to BORs so they can check answers with a partner. Feedback: (1') Show students answer key and ask them if they have any Qs about the exercise.

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Speaking activity - Instructions: T: Think about 2 things that you like and one thing that you dislike. (share the screen - jamboard). →We are going to put pictures on Jamboard. Can you see my screen ? → Each of you has a whiteboard. Which one is your white board ? You just have to find your name. First, let me show you how we use Jamboard. → Look for what you like and what you dislike. For example: I like spicy food. (look for picture) I like watching rugby (...) I hate getting up early. (...) → Look for your images. You have 2'. → Now, I will send you with a partner to a BOR. Give the partner your white board number. He/she has to guess if the picture shows something that you like or dislike. Example: Ask question: Do you like spicy food ? Yes, I really like eating spicy. No, I hate it ! Predict: You hate / really like / don't like spicy food... T: Ready ? Go to the BORs. You have 5’-6'.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on the activity

Students share what they talk about in the BORs. T: So, … tell me , does she like eating pizza? No. What did your partner tell you ?
