TP 6- Functional Language
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students (Ss) will practice functional language related to comparing ideas, agreeing, & disagreeing through guided discovery based on a text about ideal jobs. The lesson starts with a discussion in class about what jobs the people in photos might do. This is followed by a gist task where students read a text and then match the sentences describing jobs to the people that said it. Next, students will receive MFP clarification of comparing ideas, agreeing & disagreeing with a categorization activity. Finally, students will pick the best article in a gap fill exercise for controlled practice of the target language before participating in some freer practice where they will discuss what is the best job in a paired speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To practice functional language related to comparing ideas, agreeing and disagreeing in the context of discussing jobs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with speaking fluency practice in the context of jobs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Last week Ss talked about different jobs, so show Ss photos of 4 different people and have them guess what their jobs could be and why in open class. Prompt them with questions such as: What do you think? Do you agree?

Exposure/Highlighting (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Gist/intensive: Give Ss a text of 4 people stating the jobs they want. Ss will then work in pairs to complete a matching activity on google forms, matching the people with jobs they think would fit them best (~5-6 mins), followed by OCFB (~1-2 mins). Encourage Ss it’s okay if they don’t know all of the words, try to use context clues. ICQ: individually or pairs? (pairs) How long? (5-6 mins) what do you do? (read text & match people to jobs they could do) Remember: check if your partner agrees or disagrees with your reasoning. CCQ: psychologist works with mind or body? (mind); Plumber: call to fix sink & pipes; Does a translator know more than one lang.? (yes) - Matching: I think Morgan could be a…(psychologist), I think Luke could be a…(plumber), I think Carmen could be a… (translator), I think Jong could be a… (stock trader)

Clarification (12-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Ss check meaning, appropriacy, and form on wordwall individually with a categorization activity (~4-5 mins), followed by peer check (~2-3 mins) and OCFB (~2 mins). Encourage Ss it’s alright if they don’t finish, b/c they will peer check as well. ICQ: individually or pairs? (individual) How long? (5 mins) what do you do? (categorize phrases). CCQ: check meaning, appropriacy- Is comparing ideas the same as sharing ideas? (yes) Do the ideas have to be the same? (No, they can be different) Are ideas facts or opinions? (opinions) Is sharing ideas more formal or informal? (informal) Is “I agree” and “I disagree” more formal than “I think so” and “I don’t think so”? (Yes, more) o Comparing ideas: Opinion, I think/don’t think… because, what do you think?, do you agree?, maybe they should… o Agreeing: same opinion, I agree, I think so o Disagreeing: different opinions, I disagree, I don’t agree, I don’t think so o Is comparing ideas formal or informal? informal - Drill individually & chorally for pronunciation (~2 mins). o a-GREE (/əˈɡɹiː/) 2 syllables, weak a sound o dis-a-GREE (/dɪsəˈɡɹiː/), 3 syllables, don’t stress prefix, weak a sound o don’t (/dəʊnt/), 1 syllable, no pause b/w sounds with apostrophe o I think… beCAUSE… (/aɪ θɪŋk… bɪ’kəz/), think has short th- sound, because has 2 syllables, shwa e sound

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Ss will complete a gap fill exercise on google forms individually (~3 mins) before peer checking via chat (~1 min) and OCFB (~2 mins). ICQ: individually or pairs? (individual) How long? (3 mins) what do you do? (fill in the gaps with the best word provided). o (I think) ….. Jong should be a Doctor because he wants to make a lot of money. o What do you think?.... (Do you agree?) o He doesn’t want to help people, so…. (I don’t agree). o (I think maybe he should be)…. a lawyer instead. o That’s a good idea,…. (I agree).

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Ss will discuss what they think the best job is (why) and if they both agree in pairs in BORs for (~7-8 mins). I will give them a list of jobs to choose from so they don’t have to spend time coming up with some. ICQ: in pairs? (yes) How long? (~7-8 mins) What are you discussing? (What job is the best & if they agree). Remember: use agree/disagree/ I think…because! o Which job is the best? Why? Do you both agree?  Lawyer  Teacher  Doctor/nurse  Firefighter  Police officer  Waitress/waiter  Bus driver - OCFB & DEC on jamboard (~2-3 mins)
