Description

This is a productive skills lesson focused on speaking through an activity-based approach to introduce and practice phrases and vocabulary.

Main Aims

  • Aims: To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of likes and dislikes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary in the context of likes and dislikes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my students the following questions: 1. What do you love? 2. What do you hate? Then I will show something I dislike, and explain why.

Elicit/Preparation (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. Descriptive phrases activity: I will present a task for the class in which they will be presented with phrases representing degrees of like/dislike.: Instructions - Students will have a minute to read over the phrases individually, then we will solve the task. Demo - show example. Activity - I will call on Ss individually to match the phrases with the numbers in the like/dislike scale. 2. Vocabulary activity: I will present a collection pictures of nouns and verbs representing things and activities that people may like or dislike. Instructions - I will give the students a minute to look over the activities and then ask them individually identify the picture, and tell me if it is a noun or a verb. Demo - show example. Activity - I will call on Ss individually to identify the picture and tell me if it is a noun or verb. I will highlight and clarify useful language for coming speaking task.

Speaking Task (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Conversation oriented activities - In BOR (5 - 6 minutes, x 2 or 3 rounds) I will ask students to ask their partner: What do you like? What do you dislike? How much do you like/dislike? And explain why. I will monitor / write potential mistakes for DEC. We will come back from BOR and discuss answers in the next stage.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
