TP6_Functional language
Intermediate level

Description

The lesson starts with a short text activity where Ss identify the TL (making request and asking for permission). This is followed by MFP where Ss discover the functional structures and pronunciation related with the TL. Ss produce sentences in the context of a restaurant to make requests and ask for permissions. Finally, Ss practice in a role play the sentences they produced. T monitors and give DEC.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

https://jamboard.google.com/d/1IEbgC81safLVmJBeedxHrrMrPuwtUuoiafYhbgADj6w/edit?usp=sharing T screen shares GJamboard and elicits answers from Ss as an initial task: Ask Ss: Where are the people in the photo? (Open air restaurant) Ask Ss: Who is the man who wears in black? (Waiter) Ask Ss: What about the other 4 guys? What is their role (Clients) Ask Ss: What is the question that a waiter usually ask to take your order? Text-work - intensive (8-8 minutes) • The purpose is to ask Ss to identify the TL

https://forms.gle/yxDTXabrVJHT1dcA7 T screen shares a Gform link in the chatbox. T gives 4min for this pair-work activity. Ss read in a role play the text, that it means one Ss read the text as Tom and the other Ss read the text as Lucas. After the role play, Ss will need to answer the 2 questions in the Gform activity. What "request" is Lucas asking Tom? What 3 "permissions" does Lucas asks? Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: •Are you going to read the text individually or in pairs? (In pairs, role play) •How many minutes do you have for this activity? (4 min) T split Ss into BORs. T monitor conversations in BORs. T elicit answers from 2 Ss.

MFP (12-12 minutes) • The purpose is to clarify the TL

https://forms.gle/XpWiC7XFYKWGyLEcA T share a Gform link in the chatbox and give 5min to answer in pairs the 8 questions. Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: •Are you going to answers the Gform individually or in pairs? (In pairs) •How many minutes do you have for this activity? (5 min) T split Ss into BORs. T monitor answers in BORs. T elicits answers from Ss. T gives OCFB and check answers using CCQ. 1 “Do you mind” is a formal way to ask permission. 2. Do you mind if + subject + verb in present. 3. Intonation pattern (2). Rising intonation. 4. Appropriate answer: Yes, no problem. 5. “Is it OK if” is an informal way to ask permission. 6. Is it OK if+ subject + verb in present. 7. Intonation pattern (1). Rising intonation. 8. Appropriate answer: Sure, no problem. T uses GJamboard to show Ss how adding “please” at the beginning or end of the question turn the question into courtesy. T elicit Ss to make questions using the structures. How can you ask permission to close a window? (Can I close the window?) How can you make a request to close a window? (Can you close the window?) How can this questions be more polite? (Adding “please”)

CP (6-6 minutes) • The purpose is mainly accuracy (Form)

https://forms.gle/59Hjrvo2F5ZJAdJ16 T screens shares a Gform link in the chatbox. T gives 6min for this pair-work activity. T gives an example of how to answer the first question. 1. Can I have a table for two? 2. Can I take your meal order? 3. Could you turn the A/C on? 4. Can I order a bowl of cereal? 5. Do you mind if I change my order? 6. Is it OK if I smoke inside the restaurant? 7. Do you mind if I clear the table? 8. Could you bring me the bill? 9. Could you split the bill in 2 parts? Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: •Are you going to complete the task individually or in pairs? (In pairs) •How many minutes do you have for this activity? (6 min) T split Ss into BORs. T monitors answers in BORs to gather material for DEC.

FP (10-10 minutes) • The purpose is mainly fluency (meaning/ pron)

T gives 6min for the role play activity. Ss will talk and act as a waiter and diners using questions to make request and asking for permission in the restaurant. T encourage Ss to create their own sentences using structures they learned in the previous activity. Ss can also use sentences from the previous CP activity. Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: •How many minutes do you have to role play? (6 min) •Are you going to work individually or in pairs (Pairs) T split Ss into BORs, then repeat the same activity with different peers at least once (twice if time permits). T monitor conversations in BORs to gather material for DEC.

DEC (4-4 minutes) • The purpose is to give feedback

T complies Ss on interesting conversations. T nominates Ss to elicit answers from their conversations in BORs. Use to gather more material for DEC. T writes a few examples of good and upgradeable speech on the GJamboard. Include issues with grammar structures and intonation/stress.
