Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice verb patterns (+ verb-ing, + infinitive with to, + infinitive) in the context of cultural traditions and customs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a communicative task

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets SS T shows a slide with the question ”What are some strange traditions/customs in your country?” T helps Ss think of an idea by telling them "for example in Taiwan you have to remove your shoes before you enter your house. Do we have a similar custom in Mexico? Talk about it with your partners in the BOR. T sends Ss to BOR for 2 min Then, T conducts OCFB

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows Ss a text about Culture Shock, then sends through the chat a PDF file with the text for Ss T tells Ss "in this text you will learn more strange traditions from other countries. You will have two minutes read it. When you finish reading you will choose the best title for each paragragh" T shows the Ss the two options below the text. And T points out the two numbered spaces above each paragraph Ss will be sent to BOR for 1 min to discuss their answers. Then T conducts OCFB

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shows Ss a table with verb patterns and the fist paragraph of the text, points out the verbs in bold and asks Ss "Are these words nouns or verbs?" Then T asks Ss another question "Which verb forms come after these verbs?" T points out to the table with verb patterns, so Ss know the name of the verb forms. T writes the verbs from the first paragraph under each section. Then T tells Ss "Now, you have to do the same activiy with the verbs in blue in the text"

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows Ss an exercise T tells Ss they need to fill in the spaces with the correct verb form (ing, infinitive with to or infinitive) T points out the example in the exercise so Ss get a better idea of what to do T tells Ss they have 3 min When the time is up, Ss are sent to BOR to check their answers for 2 min Then OCFB

Free Practice (8-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T tells Ss "write one tip about how to behave (act) in your country" T provides an image as an example and says "In Mexico whe you meet someone you normally shake hands" T shows an image of two people shaking hands. T asks Ss "Can you give another example or tip of how to act in your country?" Ss do this activity individually for 2 min Then T sends Ss to BOR to share their ideas for 2 min Then T asks some Ss in front of the class so Ss can compare answers
