Teaching Practice 4
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will have the opportunity to expand their vocabulary in the 'Global Issues' topic and they will practice their speaking skill. I am planning to use test-teach-test approach.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students a chance to increase their vocabulary knowledge about 'Global Issues'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the opportunity for students to practice their speaking skill in controlled and freer activity

Procedure

Warm up (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students to engage in the topic

I start the class by writing the word 'Global Issues' on the board and I plan to hold a globe in my hand so it will ease my job to talk about 'Global'. Then I elicit the meaning of this word and I make sure they understand what it means. Then I ask students to give me some examples.

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To check students knowledge of different kinds of global issues

I put 7 pictures around the 'Global Issues' on the board and I put the words related to each picture on the right side of the board. I ask Ss to work in pairs and then come to the board and match the pictures with categories. Then I get the WC FB. The possible words that Ss might ask are : Poverty , Conservation and Genetic. I have prepared the MFP for these words.

Test Vocabulary (stage 1) (5-5 minutes) • To check students knowledge of vocabulary about global issues

I have chosen 7 headlines. I ask Ss to work individually in 2 minutes and then PW to check their answers. I explain to them that I won't answer any questions in this stage until they have finished the task. Next I ask ICQ's and give them the hand outs. Then I get WC FB.

Teach Vocabulary (10-10 minutes) • To provide students MFP for necessary words

The possible words that Ss ask are : Forest, Shut down, Clone, Population and Hostel. I have provided the appropriate MFP for them. Then I ask CCQ's to check they have understood the words or not. I have prepared a slideshow to check their understanding as WC FB.

Test Vocabulary (stage 2) (5-7 minutes) • To check students understanding of the new vocabulary

I have prepared a controlled written practice which checks students understanding of recently learnt vocabulary. I ask them to work individually and after 3 minutes they can check in PW and then I get the WC FB by asking Ss to read one by one. I ask ICQ's and then give them the hand outs.

Controlled speaking practice (5-6 minutes) • To check students ability of using the new vocabulary

I ask Ss to GW and do the Ex.2 in 4 minutes. I model by answering the questions myself. I ask ICQ's and then I get WC FB. (If I run out of time, I will skip this stage and move on to the last activity)

Discussion (5-7 minutes) • To provide students to brainstorm their ideas

I have provided some global issue examples on papers. I divide Ss into groups of three and I give each group those papers and they need to come up with a solution for each issue. By doing this I would like to engage the quiet students. (I ask ICQ's) Then I get WC FB.
