Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice with a partner and group of people. Listening skills will also be utilised during this lesson.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks Ss if they have seen a good movie recently? What did they think of it? Engages the Ss for a few minutes and allows them to start paying attention to their peers as they listen. T chooses 2 Ss from random and asks for their answer/opinion.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T provides 2 possibly unknown words for the Ss to understand prior to the exercise. Critic and Reviews. Ss will then engage in the gist exercise. T plays an audio file for the Ss after giving them 2 questions to think about for the audio. What did they see? & did they enjoy it? Ss will listen to the audio and then provide the T with their thoughts after discussing it with a partner in breakout rooms for 3 minutes. T will ask Ss as a group in the main room to discuss their answers briefly to complete this task.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will go over common phrases used when giving your opinion about a movie, including: I really hated the villain The main characters were great It was’nt based on a true story How surprising was the ending The plot was great! Then pronounce them for the Ss to hear the intonation and linkage between some words and to identify the stressed words in the sentences (1 sentence at a time). T will then ask Ss to chorally pronounce the sentence and individually if required to assist with pronunciation further.

Productive Task(s) (14-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T will ask the Ss to think of a good movie they have seen recently (2 minutes to plan) and to use the phrases provided to share their opinion with a partner in a breakout room. They will have 5 minutes and will rotate to another partner an additional 2 times (15 minutes total) after they practice speaking about their opinion.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T has written down phrases including both correct and incorrect used by some Ss as he monitored them. T asks the Ss as a collective whether they think the phrase is correct or not? Why? T will also get the Ss to discuss this if there is enough time so that they can correct themselves to boost their confidence and understanding of the language.
