Materials

Abc Face2Face Pre-Intermediate Student's book
Abc Google Jamboard
Abc Google Docs - True or false Activity

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for gist and detail in the context of a holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of going on vacation to New Zealand

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a slide with the question “Where did you go on your last vacation?” T says: “for example on my last vacation I went to Oaxaca. Wonderful place, the food is delicious” Then T asks one Ss the question to model it in front of the class. “Where did you go on your last vacation Maria?” Ss answers, after that T explains that the activity will be done in pairs in the breakout rooms. T says: “In the breakout rooms you will tell your partner where you went on your last vacation. You have 2 mins”. After that T elicits answers from some students to check on their response

Pre-Listening (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows a slide with three pictures. T says “here we have an exercise similar to the one we did the previous class. You have three pictures. Look at picture number 1. T point at the picture with laser from jamboard. What is New Zealand? Is it a person? Is it an animal?” Ss may answer “It’s a country”. Then, T moves the sticker with the definition ‘A country which is close to Australia” under the section Meaning. Then T asks them Is it a noun or a verb? After they answer, T moves the green sticker under the section form. Then T explains “you have to match the stickers to the correct sections for each photo and you will work in pairs. This time I will give a snapshot and you will take notes in your notebook, you have 2 min”. T will provide a snapshot of the slide for each breakout room. Ss have 2 min. Then T will ask Ss to participate in order to answer the exercise as a whole class.

While-Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

T shows a slide with the question "Where is each person going for his/her next holiday? T will tell Ss “Now, we’re going to listen a conversation between Josh and Esmay”. They will talk about their next vacation. You need to listen and answer the question "Where is each person going for his/her next holiday? T points to the information under the questions (the names JOSH and ESMAY on the left and MEXICO and NEW ZEALAND on the right) and tell Ss they need to match the names of the people and the countries. I’ll send a snapshot of the slide to the Ss so I can play the audio to everyone. Ss listen to the recording one time and then I ask Ss the questions so they can share their answers to the whole class.

While-Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T shows a document with six sentences in it and tell Ss “this is a True or False exercise” T tell Ss “you will listen to the recording again. This time you need to listen more carefully and try to tell me if the information is true or false”. T asks some Ss to read the questions out loud and then T plays the recording. T will send a link of the document to the chatroom so they can have the questions and read while listening. When the recording is finished, we’ll check the answers as a whole class.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will answer the question "Would you like to go to New Zealand for vacation? Why/Why not?. They will be sent to breakout rooms to discuss this question for about 3 min. Then, as a whole class I will ask some Ss the questions so we can all listen to their answers.
