Description

The lesson starts with a short conversation about the places Ss want to visit. This is followed by MFP where Ss read and answer an activity related with the TL (places). Finally, Ss talk about places, explaining where they are, and important features of a place.

Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss: Would you rather have a vacation on the beaches of Cancun or in Las Vegas? Ask Ss: What do you prefer, celebrate a vacation in Orlando with your friends or to visit Xcaret with your friends? Ask Ss: What do you prefer, take a yatch trip in Los Cabos or spend a weekend in NYC and visit Broadway?

Content Prep (5-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T give 1 minute for Ss to think in a place they would like to visit alone, think where it is, and describe interesting details. T gives example using TL. I would like to visit Madrid next year. Madrid is in Europe. I want to visit a cousin who lives there T screen shares 2 questions on GJamboard and ask Ss to talk in pairs for 3min: • What place would you like to visit? • Why are you interested in visiting…? Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: • What will you discuss? (Places we want to visit alone) • How many minutes do you have to discuss? (3 min) T split Ss into BORs. T monitor conversations in BORs. T elicit answers from 2 Ss.

Language Prep (6-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T gives OCFB and check answers using CCQ. 1. I would like to visit Cancun CCQ: Is the sentence “I would like to visit Cancun” polite and friendly? (yes) CCQ: Is the sentence “I want to visit Cancun” polite and friendly? (No) CCQ: Does the sentence “I want to visit Cancun” sounds selfish and arrogant? (yes) • The structure of the sentence, “I would like to visit ____” uses a modal. The modal is used to make an offer or a request in a polite way. The blank can be replaced with the name of a city/country that want to be visited. • T models and drill the sound /aɪd/, the contraction of I’d = I would. Ss do choral drilling. 2. It's southeast of Mexico CCQ: In which country is the described place located? (Mexico) CCQ: Is the place located in the south or in the east of Mexico? (In between) CCQ: Is this sentence talking about the past or the present? (Present) • The sentence ‘It’s southeast of Mexico” can be breakdown “_____ is north/south/east/west of ____”. This structure can be used to indicate where a place is located. The first blank space can be filled in with the name of the place to be described and the second blank can be filled in with the name of the country to which the place being described belongs. • T models and drill the sound /əv/ instead of /ɑːv/. Ss do choral drilling. 3. Cancun is known/famous for its fine white sand beaches CCQ: Is the word “known for” a positive or negative action of an object? (Both) Negative feat: Cancun is known for its high crime rate. Positive feat: Cancun is known for its white sand beaches CCQ: Can the word “famous for” have the same meaning as the word “known for” in the sentence “Cancun is famous for its white sand beaches” (Yes) • The sentence “Cancun is known for its white sand beaches” uses a collocation verb + preposition. The sentence helps to describes features of the places that we plan to visit. The structure is: _____ is known for its _____. The first blank can be completed with the name of the place we plan to visit, and the second blank can be completed with the characteristic that makes that place unique. • T model and drill the syllable /tʃ/ as in /tʃer/ and then model and drill the syllable /iː/ as in the word /siːt/. All the Ss drill together the word /biːtʃs/. 4. When people think of Cancun, they think of the Cari-bbean Beaches CCQ: Are people reminding an idea when they “think of Cancun”? (Yes) CCQ: Is the opinion of the people who think of Cancun, positive or negative? (Positive) CCQ: Is the verb “think of” talking about the present or the future? (Present) • The structure of the sentence “When people think of Cancun, they think of the Caribbean Beaches” contains a phrasal verb “think of”. This structure can be used to give an opinion about a place: When people think of ____, they think of ____. The first blank can be filled with the name of the place, and the second blank can be filled with the particular opinion of the place. • T model and drill the syllable /θ/ as in /θɪŋk/ and then model and drill the syllable /əv/. Ss must pronounce the weak form /əv/, with the schwa sound. 5. Cancun is a good place for practicing adventure sports CCQ: Is Cancun a good or bad place to practice adventure sports? (Good place) CCQ: Is Cancun well-known for its natural scenarios to practice adventure ports? (Yes) CCQ: Is the sentence “Cancun is a good place for practicing adventure sports” talking about the present or about the past? (present) • The sentence “Cancun is a good place for practicing adventure sports” follows the rule that the form of a verb after a preposition it mut be -ing. This structure “Cancun is a good place for ___” can be used to describe any other activity instead of “practicing adventure sports” e.g., “Cancun is a good place for having family vacations”. • T model and drill the syllable /-ɪŋ/ as in /ˈpræk.tɪ.sɪŋ/. Ss should note that the -g in the -ing form is not pronounced even when it is written.

Speaking Task (20-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T give 1 minute for Ss to think in a different place they would like to visit with their family, think where it is, and describe interesting details. T gives example using target language. I would like to visit Monterrey in January with my family. Monterrey is in the north of Mexico. Monterrey is famous for its Saddle Mountain or Cerro de la Silla. When people think of Monterrey think of Cabrito, that’s a famous dish. My favorite is cabrito al pastor. Monterrey is a good place for having vacations with family. T screen shares 2 questions on GJamboard and ask Ss to talk in pairs for 5min: • What place would you like to visit? • Why are you interested in visiting…? T encourage Ss to use TL they learned in the previous activity. Use ICQs and call on Ss by name: • What will you discuss? (Places we want to visit with family) • How many minutes do you have to discuss? (5 min) • Will you discuss the same place or a different place of previous activity? (Dif) T split Ss into BORs, then repeat the same activity with different peers at least once (twice if time permits). T monitor conversations in BORs to gather material for DEC.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T complies Ss on interesting conversations. Ss to share what they learned from their peers. Use to gather more material for DEC. T writes a few examples of good, incorrect, and upgradeable speech on the GJamboard. Include issues with lexis and pronunciation/stress; try to focus less on grammar.
