Description

In this lesson Ss will revise vocabulary related to summer holidays in the context of choosing holidays. Ss will also learn prepositions of place and time by solving a map task. There will be several opportunities for Ss for personalized speaking and freer practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with an opportunity to express themselves about summer holidays in the context of reading and listening about choosing a holiday home.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To clarify prepositions of place and movements in the context of reading an e-mail about directions to a holiday home To revise vocabulary related to summer holidays.

Procedure

Warm-up/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set the context for the lesson

Divide Ss into three goups. Give an empty poster to each group. The first group brainstorms the vocabulary related to places in town, second hotel facilities and the third holiday activities. Give each group 1-2 mins Groups exchange the poster and add extra words if they find any. Stick the posters to the wall. Write the sentences on the w/b: When was the last time you stayed in a hotel, hostel or holiday home? Did you like the place? Why/Why not Elicit some more questions from the Ss and write them on the board e.g. Who did you go with?What did you do there? How long did you stay there? Ask Ss to as and answer these questions in pairs. Monitor.

Pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • To engage students in the topic.

Distribute the photo and the reading from the page 90 Ask Ss to work in groups of three and think about these questions Who are these people? Are they family?Are they a group of friends? Why? Where are they now? Why do you think so? What kind of holidays can a family like that enjoy? What is a good place for a family to stay on holidays? Hotel, B&B? How many rooms? Why? What does a family need to have good holidays? What facilities and activities does a family need? write the key words on the w/b Elicit ideas from each pair.

Reading (4-6 minutes) • To get Ss to read quickly for a general understanding of the text.

Tell the Ss they will read two descriptions of holiday homes and after they read in groups of three they have to decide which place would be the best for this family and why. Each group has to come up with 3 reasons( one reason per person). Monitor each group. Ask who chose Hill Place and who chose Benton House. Get the w/c feedback.

Listening (2-4 minutes) • To listen for a general understanding.

Ask Ss which one they think will Sue choose and why. Tell the Ss they will listen to Sue deciding for the holiday house. Tell them to listen carefully and write down the reasons. Ask Ss to compare their answers in pairs and decide on one answer. Elicit the answer. Repeat if necessary

Follow-up productive skills task (7-10 minutes) • To allow Ss’ to express themselves on the topic.

Tell Ss they are going to go all together on holidays as a class. Divide Ss into 3 groups and ask what does perfect holidays mean for them. Tell them to work in groups on the ideas for 1-2 minutes. Remind Ss about the posters with the vocabulary. Elicit few ideas from each group. Distribute holiday brochures ( 3) to each group. Ss must choose the best option. After 2-3 minutes the students join another group and try to decide again. Group the Ss again, so that they decide on one place as a whole class. Elicit their choice and ask for reasons( Ss use the sentence model from the w/b- We decided to go to....beacuse....) Get feedback.

Focus on lexis (4-7 minutes) • To clarify vocabulary for prepositions place and movement.

Ask Ss Last time when you were on holidays or went to a new place how did you get there? By car, cab, walking? How do you find a place for the first time? Ask for directions? Use Google maps? When you get lost what do you do? Call someone? Ask Ss to work in pairs and ask each other these questions. Distribute RW11.1 p145 to each Student. Ask Ss to match the directions with the pictures. Peer check in pairs. Elicit the correct answers. Drill the pronunciation and word stress.

Reading (3-5 minutes) • To read quickly for specific information.

Tell the students they will be given a map and an e-mail. Ss work in pairs Each pair gets one map and one e-mail. Ss work out together where the holiday house is. Ss draw the route on a map and then compare it with another pair. W/C feedback.

Summary (1-3 minutes) • To provide feedback

Praise the Ss. Pick up some mistakes Ss made during the lesson. Encourage peer correction on the w/b.
