In this lesson students learn about PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE and the idiom GOING TO. They get to understand the difference between this two TLs, and practice when to use them.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE and the idiom GOING TO, in a context of informal conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide learners contrasting examples of both TL, to help identify accuracy and achieve fluency at speaking.

Procedure

Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To build rapport, generate interest in the topic, set lesson context and engage students.

T shares task link via chat while sharing screen and displaying three images with one question (google slides). T introduces and explains task, with demo: “Choose one of the three topics and discuss it with your partner, write only one answer for each Ss.” (Who would you like to visit, what movie would you like to see, or what would you like to eat). ICQ How many of these topics will you discuss and make notes? Answer: ONE each student.

Presentation through a text (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text about a conversation among friends

T shares text and task links via chat, while sharing screen and displaying text (google sites). 2 min T displays gist task (google jamboard), introduces and explains task. Text is about a group of friends celebrating a birthday and talking about next year’s plans, they are using informal language.Reading -2 min Matching sentences with answers according to text. Ss answer individually, time- 2 min T assigns Ss in pairs to compare answers to breakout rooms 1 min T closes breakout rooms and proceed to OCFB - 2 min

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To have Ss understand and learn meaning, form, and pronunciation of TL

T displays google jamboard to conduct MFPA. Shares slides with the different ways to talk about the future (will-present simple- present continuous-going to). Introduces PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE/ MEANING: T explains meaning and gives examples FORM works with group to demo sentence analysis PRONUNCIATION use of phonetic symbols in slide, practice drilling intonation and stress with demo in jamboard. Find linking cases, idiom: GONNA, contractions: I'M T sends link to task in google jamboard and introduces with demo. ,ICQ if needed. Ss answer individually: 'Organize words to make sentences using the TL' Teacher assigns Ss in pairs to compare answers to breakout rooms Teacher closes breakout rooms and proceed to OCFB

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

teacher provides controlled practise of the language through a google forms task, requiring form analysis. T introduces and demo task. Ss work individually and then check answets in breakout rooms with partner. T brings back group to main room for OCFB.

Freer Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher sends a communicative task for learners to use the language fluently and invites them to share ideas and talk in main room with group. The topic is What plans do you have for Christmas this year? T conducts feedback and DEC.
