Description

Students in this lesson learn about multi-word verbs through guided discovery. Listening for gist and detail. Introduction to multi word verbs.

Materials

Abc Slides

Main Aims

  • To provide examples and practice of multi-word verbs in the context of a listening text about 3 different people talking about their learning experience.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide vocabulary for speaking for fluency, listening through given text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show different pictures on a slide that could introduce the topic to them and maybe elicit keywords in the listening section.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will listen for gist and then detail to a listineng text. They will take short notes while listening. Then a short class discussion will follow.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Choose sentences from the listening text and write them on a slide. Ask students if they think there is a difference in meaning between the phrasal verb and the simple verb in it. Tell the SS to complete Exercise a on page 139 of Empower SB. Short class discussion.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Using exercises a and c in Empower WB p. 16. Cut ups of jumbled sentences in exercise b to put in the right order as a group or pair activity.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Discuss the question as a class. Ask students to talk about their learning experiences in school and about tricks they found to make learning easier.
