Description

In this lesson, students learn how to describe a Picture, Painting or a Photo with using ‘There is’ and ‘There are’. The lesson starts with a revision of prepositions of places and present continuous. This is followed by a Vocabulary exercise. Before we do the speaking exercises we have a listening part which will set an example for the main Speaking part. Finally, there is controlled speaking practice with the exercises in the book and then we will have some free time for practicing.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice of speaking for fluency to describe a room.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a revision of prepositions of place and present continuous.

Procedure

Lead-in/ Warmer (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will Show them a painting from Vincent Van Gogh and set an example by showing them how we describe pictures. For the warm up activity: I will hang pictures on the board. I will divide the whole class into two separate teams. One of the group members will race with the other one of the group member at a time. I will tell the 'preposition' and who finds it first on the board will bring his/her team a point. Picture Descriptions: There are a dog and cat in front of a Christmas tree. There is a singer under an umbrella. There is a bird on a tree. There is a mouse on the right of a box. There is a rabbit in a hat. There is a football under a table. There is a man behind bars. There is a mouse in the middle of a piece of cheese. There are books next to a clock. There is a shark behind a man. There is a car in front of a car. There is an apple between two boxes. There is a car on the left side of the road. There is a Bigmac between a Grand Mac and Mac Jr. There is a cat between two dogs. There is a man behind bars.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening/speaking

I will get them to look at the painting at page 9 and give them a minute. Ask a couple of 'Where is/are' questions. Where is the vase? Where are the people? Where is the telephone? Where is the cat? Where is the picture? Where is the book? Where is the man sitting? Is there a carpet on the floor? After that, I will get them do ex. 5. Listen and check and deal with any uncertainties.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will explain how we describe pictures and which form of words we use. Describing a picture, painting or a photo. There is/ There are to say what is in the picture. e.g. There are over 15 people in this classroom. There is 1 white board in the classroom. T will explain we use present continuous to say what the people are doing. e.g. The T is standing in the middle of the classroom. T will explain that we can combine There is/there are with the present continuous. e.g. There is a teacher standing next to the board. Ask them how we do negative and question forms. e.g. There isn't a cat on the table Is there a cat on the table?

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will pair every student and they will have their seats facing to each other. I will give each student of the pair a different Picture with a blank paper. Students A will look at his/her Picture and describe it to Ss B. Ss B will draw what he listens. After they finish they swap roles. I will divide them into small groups (3-4 students). They will talk and share their answers with each other (ex.6b.)

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide more tasks to practice speaking for fluency.

T will hang a Picture of a room on the board. Ss will divide into three groups. Each group will send participant at a time to look at the picture for 10seconds and come back to his/her group to tell the information. The information must be in a sentence form. Each group will send two or three students in total. In the end of the game, we will check the notes that the groups took.
