Description

This is a systems lesson focused on lexis through a text-based approach to introduce and practice dependent prepositions.

Materials

Abc Controversial 'Three Strikes' Cases

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification in the context of crime
  • To provide clarification of dependent prepositions in the context of crime

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of crime and conflict

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my students the following questions: 1. Does your country have a good criminal system? 2. Why or why not?

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Read a short text and identify the main ideas. I will assign the students a criminal from the text to research and will show the answers afterward.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING I will ask students some CCQ's for students to identify meaning. 1. He is dressed in his prison uniform. CCQ’s What is the preposition / prepositional phrase? What is it dependent on? Does dressed in mean wearing (synonym)? 2. The lawyer complained about the verdict. CCQ’s What is the preposition / prepositional phrase? What is it dependent on? Does complained about mean contested (synonym)? 3. He succeeded in proving his innocence. CCQ’s What is the preposition / prepositional phrase? What is it dependent on? Does succeeded in mean achieved (synonym)? 4. His appeal was approved based on new evidence. CCQ’s What is the preposition / prepositional phrase? What is it dependent on? Does based on mean citing (synonym)? FORM What is the structure of the grammar point? I will ask my students to identify the different components in the structure. Grammatical break down for dependent prepositions depends on the meaning/form of the sentence. verb/noun/adjective + dependent preposition + prepositional phrase PRONUNCIATION a. Sentence stress I will be reading the sentences out loud as examples (Clarify meaning, form and pronunciation)

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Quickly testing form. 11 sentences for controlled practice. I will ask students to complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb and preposition. (handout) I will ask students to compare answers and BOR for 6 minutes, then provide as class I will present answers and listen to feedback.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Conversation oriented activities - In BOR (6 minutes) 1. I will ask students to choose five questions from the last task to ask their partner 2. ask follow-up questions if possible I will monitor / write potential mistakes for DEC. We will come back from BOR and discuss answers, review DEC
