Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be introduced to and practice collocations with work (in, with,for) in the context of commuting.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice in their fluency for speaking during a communicative task.


Warmer/Lead-in (4 minutes) • To set lesson context on commuting and engage students.

I will display a power point presentation with the question : How far is your job from home? and students will share to the whole class their answers. For example; I have a 10 minute drive to work.

Super commuters (10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text about supper commuters.

Students read a text quickly about super commuters and they have to guess the missing word and choose from the three options (in, for with). Then students will share their answers in private messages and then to the whole class.

Highlighting the target language. (2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to how in, for and with are used in the text.

Once students have finished the first task, they will be introduced to collocations with work (in , for with)

Clarification (8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students will be introduced to how (in, for and with ) are used.For example : In + places ,for + companies and with + people.They will see an example and will have to choose the next options. They will also see the the form used , in this case verb + prepositions by taking some extracts from the text. Pronunciation will be clarify asking students to pronounce each word and also by asking them where the sentence stress.

Controlled Practice (9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice using in, for and with correctly with work.

In a google form students will have to complete sentences using one of the three prepositions ( in, for, with) and word from the list. (A hospital -an engineering company -Young children - fashion company - a restaurant - unemployed people) Lynn is a pre-school teacher. She Works __________. David is a waiter. He works ________. Judy is a fashion designer. She work __________ Ruth Works ________ ______________. She helps them find a job. Diane is a doctor. She Works ____________. Andrew is an engineer. He Works ___________________. Students will then check their answers between them by private messages and then shared with the whole class.

Communicative task (12 minutes) • To provide students with practice on speaking.

A communicative task is created in which students have to tell their partners about their jobs and commute in break out room while teacher is monitoring. Student´s will take some notes and then answer following up questions such us: WHAT IS YOUR PARTNER´S JOB ? DOES HE/SHE COMMUTE ? WHAT KIND OF TRANSPORTATION DOES HE/SHE USE ? DOES YOUR PARTNER LIKE OR DISLIKE COMMUTING?
