Main Aims

  • To identify and produce the letter-sound correspondence blends -nt, -nk, -nt. Utilize and apply phonics skills to decode words.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Read high-frequency words.
  • Utilize and apply phonics skills to decode words.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present picture cards and ask Ss for information about them (e.g. what is a sink for? where do you find it? what is a tent? where do you use one?...)

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and reading the final consonant blends

Present the word cards from Lessons & Decodable Texts>Grade 1>Lesson 6. As a class, Ss listen and repeat the words. Ss take turns reading some or all the words. Discuss meanings of words.

Pre-Reading Discussion (2-4 minutes) • To make the text accessible

Show Ss cover of book. Ask what they see in the picture and what the story might be about. Ask students what they know about tennis, who likes to play tennis, how often they play tennis, etc?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss take turns reading Grand Slam Tennis. Ask questions about the text after each page to confirm comprehension of the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (2-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss for a summary fo the book proceeded by details. Try to get as many details as possible.

Post-Reading/Spelling (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice and expand on what they've learned

Through dictation, Ss are given a final s-blend word and must write it in the correct column as well as spell it correctly.
